Which model to buy

Hi guys. My first post so be gentle....

I've been researching for quite a while now which car to get next and have finally settled on a Freelander 2. I'm now trying to sort out which version to get though which has been complicated for my by the new limited edition models for 2010 (white and black versions - it'd have to be black....)

My quesiton then comes down to what I can see as being the only real difference between the limited edition black version and a GS - the lack of terrain response control on the limited edition. Is it worth having or can I get by without it? I'd plan on doing a limited amount of off-roading (will mainly be motorway driving) but when I do want to go off-road I want to have a vehicle that can perform reasonably well - so is it a must have or not?

Also if anyone else knows of any must haves that aren't included in the limited edition but I'd get on other higher end models please do let me know - not fussed about leather seats or fancy plastic bits that make it look like a range-rover - just want something that will perform well on and off road!!!

Cheers all

John.

Hi chapps Thumbs Up
If you’re going to do some off-roading soft or extreme, then TR is a real benefit and some would say necessary. However TR also helps with traction in winter snow/ice conditions. Likewise an automatic is also recommended but secondary to TR.

So, if I were to recommend you – go for a spec with Terrain Response first, and if you can afford it an automatic in addition.
All other equipment would be cosmetic choice Thumbs Up 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.
Stornoway Grey with Ebony Black Pleather, Clear Indicators, Body Side Mouldings etc.

I always think when limited edtions come out they will not hold value as a proper edtion

having no TR system on the Limited, looks like they are based on a 'S' Spec with Extras

They say a standard GS is the one to go for, Nicely spec'ed now with Bluetooth radio PTI

By looking at something such as How did a FL1 model compare/devalue compared to something like as FL1 Kalahari special edtion etc might give you an idea of future values Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

But at the end of the day it comes down to is TR worth £6000 - the GS is that much more expensive... I could buy the special edition and get my wife a new small car for the same price as the GS on it's own...

By the time I've finished with it 2nd hand value is of less import - I do around 25,000 miles a year and will be keeping for 4 years so it's going to be worth nowt anyway...

So what would you pay over and above to get TR? does the S version (on which I also think the special edition is based) as capable off-road / on snow / on ice?

John

ive had the s for 17 months, drove it in snow, ice, mud etc,its ok,now got a gs e with terrain responce, and it does make the difference, ive just come home,ice/snow/grass setting and got up our hill with 2 inches of snow falling in 1 hr,no problem, every one just staring at me Razz all cars left adrift each side of the road.the spec on the gs e my10 is more that anthing you would want. Thumbs Up just remember the more thing on it the more that can go wrong.

To have a FL2 without TR seems pointless to me, then I am biased.
I think you will find the new black is in fact Dark Lago Grey Rolling Eyes 09 FL2 HSE auto Lago Grey

It is worth the extra - all on the forum will tell you that Thumbs Up I can guess that if you choose a FL2 without TR and later tried one with TR when it is needed, you will no doubt regret going for the cheaper deal. 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Cheers guys - it's good to hear from someone who's owned both an S and a GS that they think it's worth it. I guess I'll just need to haggle hard when the time comes Wink

Oh - and the new black is.... nope... black. definitley black. Actually I was drooling over the pics of the vinyl wrapped matt black FL2 on here earlier - now that's gorgeous....

Hi Chapps,
I fully understand the cost of the car with or without TR, But it really dose make a it worth the extra £££,
I'm stunned in how good the snow setting has worked over the past few weeks see my Gallery, not bad for a car not much bigger then a ford focus.
I have not got stuck anywhere apart from 2 foot of snow. and i'm sure most 4x4's would have had the same problems.
Keep hunting and all the best luck. Thumbs Up

Just a thought but why not get a low milage 2nd hand one with a spec you want?

I got a 1 year old XS with 9k on the clock for £18k, list price was £27k Shocked If you're looking in the mid £20k's anyway you'd pick up an SE or HSE... just my two penneth, but if your 2 years down the line with 60k on the clock & not 50k because you bought 2nd hand, who'll know?? Never understood buying new cars??? Sheep
