Rear diff / Haldex Unit Failure

I have already had a replacement unit fitted after experiencing serious clicking/grounching noises when performing a quick pull away on a full lock.

After 8 months it looks like the noise has returned, and I have a warranty claim going through at the moment for another new diff/haldex unit.

Has anyone else experienced this noise and or had needed a replacement diff? Freelander 2 XS 2.2 TD4 Met Black, with Winter pack, 18" alloys with General Grabber AT2 wellies, MANTEC Sump and Tank Guards

Hi guys thanks for posting. I was aware that Haldex has been around for a long time, VAG have been using it on the golf/A3 etc for years, but FL2 was the first to use the 3rd Generation Haldex unit. I believe the Volvo XC90 also uses the 3rd generation haldex unit and my car noise does resemble something like that within the youtube link below

Within another post soemone suggested the 4th generation haldex unit might be used on late 09 FL2's. Do we know if this has happened? Or is it being saved for the LRX?

I have suggested to the dealer that we make use of the 4th generation haldex unit if possible in the hope that it fixes the problem once and for all, but they dont really seem to know what I was talking about.

I have been wondering if it is actually something else that is wrong, but only the diff that noticably fails, hence after replacing it, it still goes wrong again after only a few months. With the XC90 youtube clip, Chrisx4 on Landyzone I know I'm not alone, but I had thought I'd find more of you on here that have had similar problems?

thanks again for any further posts guys Thumbs Up Freelander 2 XS 2.2 TD4 Met Black, with Winter pack, 18" alloys with General Grabber AT2 wellies, MANTEC Sump and Tank Guards

I needed a new rear diff last year which was closeley followed by a new auto gearbox. The dealer couldn't strip the diff down to see what the problem was as they have to send them back to LR untampered with. The problem with the gearbox might have been related but again i dont know. The car has been great this week in the snow, i was in Braemar with two feet of snow and minus 22 and the car never faltered. I am glad i wasnt towing the caravan however as it is now there until March.

Driving home last night my rear diff decided it didnt like prop shaft any more and ejected it out! So I dont think there will be any debate over what has failled now! Freelander 2 XS 2.2 TD4 Met Black, with Winter pack, 18" alloys with General Grabber AT2 wellies, MANTEC Sump and Tank Guards

Sorry for not responding sooner. I had the rear diff go out over the summer but did not realize it until the noise got very loud at end of November. Only hadf one spare in the USA. Took a week to get the work done. Less then a 100 miles later, I had a very loud bang with a start off accelleration on a slipper surface. The dealer now says it is the Haldex unit. The car has been in since Dec 20. They just installed the Haldex and the rear diff won't engage. They have now ordered a new diff but none are in the states. They said maybe another 2 weeks. Thank God I have a free loaner. Car has 44,000 miles.

This sucks. None of my friends will buy a Land Rover now. It just supports the poor quality. I have also had the seat belts and will again have them done for the second time. The 3rd brake light loose. The rear tail light with condensate. Various other trim problems. 3 sun roofs. Even a bad floor mat where the gromments feel off.

Sorry for your problems and going off topic a bit here, BUT:
It does seen a bit weird that people that have problems with Freely's seem to get many/several problems, were as some have no problems at all, not even the most commonly reported/complained about on the forum Confused

So far I seem to be one of the lucky ones, but I wonder if the problem vehicles were built in the same period, or to a particular specification for a particular country for example. Although there are not many Norwegian Freelander 2’s on the road, I have never heard of anyone having problems (except Viking that had a flat battery once).

Maybe there is a common denominator to be found Question 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Can't you evoke the "3 strikes and your out clause".
Should get you a new vehicle.

IM sure CWC9TH can tell us but I beleive he can invoke what is called the 'Lemon' law? Not sure howmany strikes you get though.

CWC9TH you are not alone with other problems, i to have had a new rear brake light due to water ingress, allong with having new b'pillars and seatbelt on order. Also have falty radio which means new one on order. I dont have a sun roof otherwise I'm sure it would have gone wrong!

3 strikes does not work in the USA. In the state I live it is 18,000 miles. I passed that in the first 8 months. I am racking the miles on the LR3 loaner. It is a tank and not that responsive. Dealer has a call into LR right now and waiting his call back at the moment. Other then the failues and poor seat adjustments on a car of this value, it is a really nice car. The dealer, Cherry Hill Land Rover is great. Unfortunately, they are stuck with what they get from LR. Pulling parts off from manufacturing is not the solution for good customer service. Both MB and BMW would have the part the next day no matter what in the USA.
