The problem turned out to be bad fuel or a piece of dirt stuck in the fuel filter. I spent the weekend running around burning off the diesel and then refilling from a reputable fuel supplier and all is back to normal.

Wasn't supermarket fuel by any chance was it ? |

I'm in Malta and we don't have supermarket fuel here. What we have are some dodgy suppliers who are rarely (if ever) monitored. By the way I had the same thing happening to my 109 (2.5 nas engine) which has a huge tolerance for fuel quality so no wonder the Freelander stopped!
