2009 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Zermatt Silver
HELP with Bikes

What is the best answer to transport 3, or possibly 4, bicycles on/in/behind a fl2? I'd prefer 'official' solutions as I've heard horror stories involving bikes falling off and causing mayhem! New: Freelander2 GS 62 plate (MY13) - Santorini Black with Clearview & Front PDC
Old: Freelander2 XS 09 Plate - Zermatt Silver with ST3 remap (eco map), Garmin 1490T Sat Nav, Rear Seat Entertainment kit

Personally I went for Thule towbar mounted bike rack ( the ones that clamp onto towball)

but expensive when you take into account towbar fitting

I have seen too many carriers strapped to car with the straps that have come off and the bikes bouncing around Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I use one like this to carry four bikes with no problems.

Thule tow bar one is fine so long as you don't want to tow a caravan or trailer at the same time. Laughing

I've got a towbar mounted tradecar silverbike from roofbox.co.uk that fits 3, but they also do a four bike version now. It can best be described as 'sturdy' compared to the Thule/Altura racks, but it is significantly cheaper. I've had no problems with it at all.

It does have the disadvantage of being unable to be used when towing something else. Personally I'm not keen on a strap on rack, I dented the body work on a fiat punto by overtightening the straps, although that was a number of years ago so they may have improved. Unless you are very tall, roof mounted racks are difficult to put bikes on and I have seen the friends bike/roofbars after his wife went into a car park!
