Car just stops or goes into limp mode

hey guys, so my FL2 has been for a while now, going into limp mode when i need to accelerate quickly or just need a bit more than the, usual power, but a few times it has just completely shut of and I've lost all power including power steering in the middle of a 4 lane busy tunnel. i originally put it down to heat as the car would get hot and the turbo would not engage and i had a powerless 4 cyl diesel, until it cooled down a bit so in summer i drive with the heater on full and it keeps the heat in the engine down a lot, i was told a while ago that an aftermarket non LR fuel pump can cause such issues but i never looked into it as winter hit and the problem went away, the car does run hot though its almost always at the middle mark on temp gauge. we had a cyclone here a few weeks back and on average it was around24 degrees for a month no issues, but now its gone and its back to hot an humid mid 30's and the issues have again appeared.
thanks in advance for your replies.

"the car does run hot though its almost always at the middle mark on temp gauge"

What makes you think it runs hot then ?

Is it showing any OBD error codes?

The cheap fuel filters lack the temp sensitive internal valve that the genuine ones have. Id start by installing a proper filter - its not difficult though you have to prime the system manually before the engine will start - its all in the freebie JLR manual (I assume you have it ).

The genuine ones are around £50 in the UK Jules

Needs to have OBD Codes read to see what the car thinks is wrong and why it is going into Limp Home Mode.
There are lots of sensors in system and they generally decide what's happening.
Initial guess
It looks like turbo vanes/actuator, but may be a sensor in the Inlet Path.

Jules incorrect Fuel Filter is definitely worth investigating.

I believe that the Engine Temp Gauge is calibrated to indicate the middle reading unless something really bad happens. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 82k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

Yes Ian is correct - the temp gauge is non-linear and is designed to remain n the middle until temp is way off - stops owners worry too much apparently. Actual temp goes up and down quite a lot as there is a lag in the cooling system responding to a sudden increase in engine generated heat - eg a steep hill Jules

ok its the first diesel I've owned last was a RWD car and before that a petrol 4x4 both ran at around 25% on the temp gauge so I'm not sure of the diesel levels but i do know that on hot days at mid temp level the turbo stops but if i put the heater on full drop it just a bit the turbo works fine and in cool weather or rain its fine, but i will take it in and get the codes checked and the filter also looked at. thin is in the first 12 months i had FL2 it had no problems at all and i bought it at the beginning of summer.

Cheap and cheerful $24 for a code read at Supercheap in Aus. They'll give you the print out (it'll be long as god knows when it was cleared last!) they then clear the codes.... then take her back later in the week after some driving where you see the problems, and they'll read them again - that'll tell you what codes are actually getting flagged.

Or invest in a semi decent reader yourself. They really do pay for themselves pretty quick. Hell, even those little bluetooth dongle ones that connect to your phone will get you in the right ballpark with a general code (I keep one in the car as useful to clear a limp mode when you're on the road miles from home).
