Definitely not normal and an oil change may well help. |

A 12 year old car might well have 12 year old gearbox fluid. Iād change it or get it changed. |

Even the LR official Service Schedule says that at 10 years you need your ATF changed, and they are not too keen on over-servicing the car. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I think that after 12 years the autobox needs a thorough change of ATF.

I think you're looking at 2 problems here,
. No, the six speed auto should be smooth in its gear changes - it will never be as smooth as a modern Range Rover (which is heavier and has more gears), but you should only hear the change in engine tone, not feel the gear shifts. Changing the transmission fluid will likely improve things - it certainly did on my MY2011 SD4. I think your next issue is the EGR system is not quite right. You said - can you define "driving for a while? i.e. duration / speeds? Is it immeadiate on hitting standing traffic, or does it "hunt" i.e. engine revs drop momentarily as if about to stall, before recovering? [it might repeat this on a cyclic basis, every 5-10 seconds]. Can you provide any detail on the "noticeable thump"? Do you have to put it into neutral - i.e. if you don't, will it stall? (Putting the gearbox into neutral can mask an EGR issue as the engine is no longer doing any real "work". If putting the car into neutral fixes the problem, the natural reaction is to blame the transmission - when it is the power input to the transmission that is the problem...) In "near-standing traffic", will it "crawl" smoothly? (i.e. no accelerator, speed controlled by the footbrake)... Lots of questions I know, but unfortunatley you're dealing with an intermittent Freelander issue so the more info you can provide the forum, the better the responses will likely be. Good Luck! |

I agree there should be no reason to select N as the FL2 transmission is designed to hold on footbrake, the Gearbox will automatically select a 'false' neutral until you release the footbrake.

I recently had both egr and gearbox issues.
