It had around 5-10K miles on it since I replaced it and the tensioners. Its failed as the Alt Pulley 'thing' let go.

I asume you have replaced the timing belt and timed everything up correctly, if so and its still not starting you need to go deeper these engines will break the rockers if timing has slipped and worse case scenario is bent valves ive done a few of these and sometimes you will get away with a few broken rockers, you need to remove the cam belt and pull all the common rail off then the plastic breather cover then finally the cam cover also HP fuel pump and VAC pump

Hi, no, not a new belt. I'm loathed to spend on a belt if the engine is gone. The aim was simply to start the car, prove its OK and then replace it all.

I dont currently have time to do a lot of work on the car, so might need to call it.

Any idea on typical costs for the bits needed? Is it a lot of work to strip the head off?

Would I need any special tools etc?

Thanks

You will need a range of tools to do the strip down have you got any experience doing this type of work on cars, it’s not for beginners unfortunately

Im handy and got loads of tools. Rebuilt engines in the past ...

Its more a question of time, effort and cost. Less about ability unless I need specific tools. Not done any Diesel motors before however ...

That’s good news it’s more of a time consuming task so labour is the expensive part pull it apart and look at the rockers

Top tip is put everything in piles so you don’t mix up stuff it makes it a lot easier to assemble

I'm the guy from the other thread. I was lucky my timing had not jumped, but when I set it back up, I was 180degrees out because I hadn't used the pins.
Have you had any luck.

Hi,

Ive not had time again, will aim to look again tomorrow / weekend. Ours was only 1 or 2 teeth out. It's either lucky or coincidence as it looks like the diameter is larger with the belt under the belt, so I cant see how it hasnt borked the engine. Its probably gone in and out of timing many times ....

Ill take the rocker cover off if I can as well to see what damage. I wonder how easy it is to get a camera or similar to see valve damage?

Ive ressembled it all other than putting a new acc belt on. Is there any reason (other than a borked engine) why the car shouldnt start?

It wants to, almost like its not getting fuel. So perhaps valves / rockers gone?

Thanks

Is that possible, even if pins align?

So, decided to open up the engine. Saw that removing the top plastic 'thing' was fairly simple and it allows access to see some of the cam / rockers, so did that.

Ive not had a lot of time but rotating the motor, I can hear some valves opening / closing but I can also see what looks like a rocker which is 'loose'. I'm not sure if they should be able to be moved side to side when resting / not in use but I can take number 1, inlet mostly and exhaust, and move the rocker 5-10mm to the side fairly easily. Safe to assume its snapped?

The car was serviced probably 8-9 month ago. Really surprised how black the oil is. Its not sludge but looks well used. Doesnt look the same to me as others where people have taken this PCV setup off.

New oil in diesel engines is black the moment it starts to circulate.

Thanks, so the colour doesnt bother you?

Suppose back to the main thing, I cant find a pic or vid showing the rockers exposed but I would imagine that I should not be able to move them side to side. Ill keep stripping.
