power steering leak

Hi guys come out this morning to find i have a leak. Thought it was engine oil but it's power steering fluid. Looking behind the front drivers side wheel it's a rusty pipe coming down vertically and held on by a bracket . Any ideas what that power steering pipe would be called?

Try searching these pages for the part you want - it may be VIN dependent too

I dont know when you last had the steering system serviced. But I would replace the ATF reservoir at the same time and flush ATF through from the new reservoir into the old one - you need to plug off a few connections temporarily.

The ATF reservoir contains a filter which cannot be removed /cleaned - its not expensive on ebay.

Also removing the RH headlight gives a lot more room to do this task. Jules

Had the same last year and it was this one I had to replace https://www.lrparts.net/lr029185-freelande...rover.html
The scuttle drain drips down on it and over the years it corrodes it ! Every time I learn something new, something old gets pushed out of my brain?

yes that's the one 'ive ordered, taken nearly a week to come and has cost me a fortune in power steering fluid to keep it topped up so i can use the car for work .
Mine cost me £75 for the pipes, i didn't want to go for those really cheap ones, also ordered a new reservoir so hopefully they will be here today or tomorrow.
Hoping its an easy job to do the pipes

This happened to MY07 back in 2019.
1

I also bought the top hose.

The bottom corrodes.
3

The bolt should be an allen key or torx.
4

5

I cut my pipes which helped remove it as it was rounded out due to corrosion.
6

Had to tap the bolt round to loosen it with a small chisel.

Remember the power steering fluid is green not red.

Add a new reservoir.

Lift the front wheels off the floor just enough so you can turn the steering, without starting the engine.

well here goes, my neighbour kindly offered a lending hand to do this. Vehicle jacked up on axle stands for safety, tyre off wheel arch liner out and started with the T40 torx bolt which came out nice and easy so good start. That tiny T25 torx bolt that holds the rest of the pipe on the rack was abit tight to get out but she came out eventually.

I had the correct tool for disconnecting the low pressure pipe which came out nice and easy then it was undo the high pressure pipe onto the steering pump and out it all came.

tried to fit the new part i noticed all the angles of the pipes were wrong, the high pressure steel pipe coming out from the rack was on the wrong side so i had to undo the little bracket that holds the two pipes together and swap them round, the angle of the pipe was still wrong meaning i had to try and bend the pipe top get the new high pressure pipe to get somewhere near to going on. Finally i managed it connected the low pressure pipe with a simple click, new high pressure pipe fitted to the pump, fill with new fluid started her up, all going well , bled the system steering well left then right then a big back and high pressure pipe is off and it looks like a blooming murder scene with power steering fluid all over the place.

Tried refitting the high pressure pipe back on filed again with fluid, bang straight off again.
So i managed to get the old high pressure pipe off the old fitting the was leaking and fit that one to the new steel pipe fitting, filled with fluid and hey presto it stayed on.

I have contacted the person i bought the pipes off from Ebay to let them know and in the meantime i have ordered a proper set from Britpart £244

Here is what the parts from ebay look like, see how the High Pressure pipe is on the wrong side in order for the part to fit

Look at the difference in the angles of the pipe compared to the original one

Fitted the new high pressure pipe to the old fittling and it does not click into place and it comes apart really easy

I have read that the cheaper versions of the pipework are rubbish, Is the pipe from Britpart a genuine one, does it have a G at the front of the part number

the pipes are totally the wrong way round and the wrong angles, Yes id did try to turn them around but that made it worse.
The genuine LandRover High Pressure pipe is LR001099 and the metal pipe and bracket is LR 029185
