Surely charging the battery from the grid defeats the object of the battery, unless you can get an extremely low rate which makes it worthwhile to charge the battery for use in a high tariff hours. from what I remember from the UK electricity tariffs there's only 2, off peak and standard, unlike here where the tariff changes quite a few times during the day and week.

That was my thinking too. I would have thought the battery wouldnt charge until the PV is producing more than the load. Jules |

Very little sun at the moment - 100% cloud for days - hence no excess PV to charge the battery Jules |

It all depends on your supplier and tariff. My supplier has a tariff called flux which has 3 price levels each for import and export. So with the current 100% cloud cover I charge my 10kW battery at cheap rate during the night and use that throughout the next day. If the sun was to come out I’d both charge the battery and consume power from the PV until the peak rate kicks in then export to the grid until I’ve got enough power left to take me to cheap rate when I can charge from the grid again. The only day I’ve consumed power from the grid at the ‘normal’ cost was Xmas day when I charged during the day to ensure there would be power over the peak rate period and beyond. Current cost (including the standing charge) of electricity over the last 365 days is 39 pence a day. Not bad when my standing charge is over 60 pence a day. |
