front PTU and it's external sleeve

Hi

The bearing in the PTU failed, so my workshop sent it for refurbishment. While I was at it, I noticed there is play between the sleeve (LR002746) and the PTU splined wheel. I also don’t see any grease there.
I assume they apply some thick grease before assembly, because this connection is probably not lubricated either by the gearbox oil or the PTU oil.



If I move the quill shaft by hand, dry, placed on the PTU splined wheel without grease, should it move (have play) or should it be tightly fitted?


It now moves noticeably, although the splines at first glance, from my amateur perspective, don't look bad. MY2011 TD4 S Manual

Current status: The workshop is putting it back together without reconditioning the splines. They say the splines are slightly worn but don't qualify for replacement. Unfortunately, we don't have specialists like in the UK here, and even though they repair various gearboxes, they are seeing such PTU for the first time. I assessed this based on photos available online from Bell Engineering and other refurbishers, and the splines look not bad. After applying thick grease to the connection between the front PTU and the sleeve, the play is no longer noticeable. MY2011 TD4 S Manual

Be careful about reassembling a mix of new and old components

I have a 2017 Discovery Sport (please refrain from the ingenieboom comments Laughing ) and had a bearing noise.
It was diagnosed by a LR specialist as the drivers side driveshaft bearing carrier having failing, apparently fairly common.
the warranty approved garaged replaced the carrier and the driveshaft with parts from LR, but reassembled it all using the old bearing carrier clamp which is the opposing half of the bearing carrier.

The result is the noise was still present and it now looks like it will need another new bearing carrier, driveshaft and clamp at a cost of nearly £700 as the old worn clamp will likely have damaged the new driveshaft and carrier after only a few hundred miles.

Ive already paid that amount for the first load of work. Garage so far are not really arguing about picking up the bill for the 2nd attempt though but we shall see how that goes.
