France 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Loire Blue
Front bearing or PTU noise?

FL2 SD4 XS 2013 100,000 miles ... late 2013 model ...

serviced to landrover schedule, and thinking about having cam belts on engine done, preventive etc

ideas please ... my local, French, agricultural and car garage, usually ok ... says that it is the front drive LH wheel bearing

h'mmm ... PTU anyone? any other ideas before I start an expensive process of elimination?

noise comes under load, gently accelerating uphill, or with passengers on board,
reduces when gear change goes up one, also when revs drop below 2000 rpm ...
been going on for a few months and has just started getting gradually noisier

It can be difficult to decide which it is.
Even the famous Bell Engineering got it wrong with my car - they thought it sounded like worn PTU but it was in fact LH front wheel bearing.


Look for abnormal wheel wobble when grabbing the raised wheel and trying to move it in the vertical and horizontal planes - may indicate a badly worn bearing.

You can sometimes detect a worn wheel bearing by raising the front wheels and spin one and grab the coil spring and feel for a vibration. Compare both sides to see if there is a difference. Jules

A set of chassis ears will diagnose it instantly, rather than firing the parts cannon at it! (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

A failed PTU pinion bearing can sometimes be felt with your hand by trying to wobble the main propshaft where it mates onto the PTU.

You've probably already solved the problem but will write a hint about PTU for others. My workshop lifted the car on a jack, the first mechanic stayed in the cabin and pressed the gas and the second mechanic with me listened under the chassis. The sound from the broken PTU was very localized, there was no way to mistake the sound for the rear differential or wheel bearings. MY2011 TD4 S Manual
