Sat Nav Upgrade (2013 model) advice required please.

Hey Guys,

I currently have a 2013 Freelander 2 XS which I've had for a number of years and still love it!

One major downside is the Sat nav, I don't think it's ever been updated and TBH, it's so unreliable that I very seldom use it, if at all nowadays.

Please, can anybody give any info or advice on the latest compatible/best updates? Other options? Is it possible to replace the whole system (if so would it be worth it?). What have other owners done with theirs?

Any feedback will be very much appreciated!

Cheers everyone,
Frank.

I didn't think this era of sat nav had the ability to update on live traffic delays!? I've definitely not seen this on my 2013 FL2!

We have a 2023 Toyota and a 2024 Clio , Compared to using Waze the Satnavs on both are pants . Just get Waze on your smartphone and plug it into the Audio if you want louder instructions . Nearly every taxi you get in now will have a smartphone running Waze . It’s free , updated in real time by users , customisable , and you can even enter business names and such . Why spend money on obsolete tech ? 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

2016 Subaru Outback SE 2.0 diesel SE Premium Lineartronic Sold 2024 after 8 years and 80k miles . Best Car I ever owned !

2023 Toyota Hilux invincible X 2.8 Auto .

Hi Frank,

You asked for advice re: satnav…..
I have a FL2 2012……since new….great car….
I fitted a replacement satnav over the screen of the original….my wife bought me a Garmin Drivesmart 65 with Amazon Alexa……6.95inch screen, about 5 yrs ago…..I fitted it over the original screen’ secured with Velcro…..wired to cigar plug. An easy fit…..it is very detailed for UK & EU…..works well…..although you can’t trust it……..same with all satnavs …..! It’s good that it has free updates for life…..updated by Wi-Fi…
……..may be better satnavs about but it works quite well. Just checked current prices…..my wife paid a discounted (QVC) price about 5 yrs ago £180 I think…… now about £150……

Hope this is helpful…..Pete

I use a TomTom20 mounted down on right hand side of screen.Actually use the TomTom for speed readouts, more accurate.

I think the latest and probably the last ever update is 2020/21 maps which are available on DVD (>2012) and (2013>) USB Stick.

The map in my 2013 car is still the factory original and faced with the then £169 (now £89) for the 20/21 usb stick version, I chose instead to buy a Garmin DriveSmart 76 with its lifetime free map updates.

I really hadn't realised just how bad the LR satnav was in comparison to the Garmin.

I have just fitted one of these;

https://unique-ad.co.uk/product/land-rover...roid-auto/

This one says upto 2012
But they do another which is down as 2011-2015.

I have set mine up as a stand alone unit with its own sim.
This way anyone that drives my car can use it.
But you can link it to your phone and use either Android auto or the I version.

Fitting is an absolute doddle.
I made a slight change to the fitting by utilising the cars own GPS antena.

The only difficult bit was running the cable to the tailgate for the reversing camera I added with it.

FOR THE SATNAV I NOW USE GOOGLE MAPS.
Never needs updating and the reaction time to a wrong turn (Or as I like to call them, 'a forced diversion).

I looked at it for about 6 months before I jumped in.
But as my sat nav had started to freeze at the most inoppertune moments, I had to do something.
I'd looked at others and I just felt it looked like the best intergration.

I still mainly use my original FL2's integrated Sat Nav, although (as you can see in this thread -
https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic31003.html?highlight=sat+nav) I still have my Garmin mounted alongside to provide additional on-line information. - Traffic, Speed Limits and Camera Sites, and Up to Date Maps.

For those that wander Off Road, it must be remembered that the original built in LR Sat Nav will continue to work in a Dead Reckoning Mode when all communications are lost.

I find the original (antiquated but integrated) displays very clear and easy to use, and the LR Re-routing does still work.

PS - Do you also lose the excellent steerable predicted lines from the reversing camera with aftermarket satnav? I find them invaluable when reversing into parking spaces as the FL2 is quite wide. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

Thanks to all for your input and suggestions, some have been insightful and informative.

I think I'll either purchase a separate SatNav or look into updating the built-in one. From what I've found, having done more research, that seemingly updates only go up to circa year 20/21.

It would appear I have an HDD satnav and not a DVD player one. I believe updates are done via USB port that is housed in centre console, which I do have.

Next questions: Has anyone tried or done the USB update? Was it straight forward and successful? Any suggestions where I can get the software from and the costs?

(Meanwhile, I'll also keep looking online).

Looking forward to hearing back, thanks again,
Frank.

I only made the change because mine had started to freeze up, or when it first loaded it would tell me I was in the wrong country???

I was gutted once it became unreliable a scontrary to some others I liked the LR system.
