HI all,
First time here - I have a 2010 FL2 TD4 XS, and the cam belt went two days ago, at around 105kmiles...
The mechanic is saying its not worth repairing and a new engine could cost what I paid for it, which was £4k (April 2024).
Has anyone got any thoughts on the best course of action?

Unusual for belts to fail at that milage, I would get a second opinion. 2013 FL2 XS.

The engine is a basic Ford/Peugeot engine, there will be many used examples about for little money, depending how DIY you and your mates are removing the engine and transferring the LR bits to the donor engine. 100k for a belt and I would say yes that is suspiciosly early.
But a 2010 car in 2024 and they should be changed every 7 years, then you have been lucky to get this far.

If I remember correctly the original mileage specification was 150k or 10 years (whichever is the soonest) but I got shortened at some point to 100k or 7 years. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Some said to change it at 75K to be well on the safe side.

If damage is just bent valves and broken rockers, then the parts spend is minor. However a replacement engine wouldn't be much more than repairing the one you have.
Labour is the expensive part, so here a replacement engine would work out less. A good second hand engine can be had for about £750, plus whatever labour and consumables are needed to complete the job. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

This is all really helpful thanks - been quoted 15 hours work at £60+VAT to remove and install new engine so if I can find one at approx £750 that would be worth it.
Thanks again - this has really helped with reaching a decision.

PS anyone got any recommendations for a mechanic in the Merseyside/NW who really knows what they're doing with a FL?

One of the mechanics at Land ranger Services runs a FL2 that he has had for many years, been to the moon and back, swears by them. They are cheaper but often have a 2 month wait.

The guys at K services are helpful and know thier stuff - fitted a thermostat to the DS (don't ask, it's a nightmare job if you have the hands of a gorilla) a lot cheaper than dealers and fitted me in with only a week delay. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Welcome, plenty of s/h engines available, check out ebay or any number of car or 4x4 breakers.
