Bought my first Freelander 2 - love it. Not new to the brand having had multiple Discoveries, RR, Defender and S2a.

Handbrake was awful, had a look at cable adjustment, only off-side would adjust, near side was very slack.

Took both rear discs off - the off side had everything there. The near side had nothing, absolutely nothing!

Is this standard practice for when something goes wrong, i.e. strip out every component? Could anyone give me an easy list of what needs to be bought to put the near side handbrake back in?

No its not standrd practise . But people have been known to hide problems by removing parts inc the prop shaft to hide a haldex fault

The FL2 has two types of parking brake - the later model had a simpler electric brake which is generally easier to srvice.

I've just done my 2009 (10 plate) rear brakes a few weeks ago.

The handbrakes are a pain to get adjusted right (between binding and not holding enough).

I would look at the state of the rear discs and pads and consider doing the lot (if you are going to keep the car long).

There are 2 types of discs, one for the cable handbrake type, one for the electric handbrake type.
It's easy to tell which is which by the adjuster hole in the front face of the disc (cable type).

If you are doing the lot, you will need:
2 x rear discs

New set of rear brake pads

New rear handbrake brake shoes

Handbrake pivot lever (maybe consider a new one for both sides on condition inspection).

Just to point out, that after doing mine, I also had to fit 2 new rear calipers, as the old pair were sticking, after pushing the pistons back in.
