How to replace the bluetooth phone module

On my 2007 HSE the phone module failed. Pressing the telephone button on the dash elicited no response at all. The radio and sat nav were still working fine. Having checked the fuse myself, the dealer investigated and reported that the phone module had failed and would need to be replaced. They quoted £370 inc vat to replace it. I knew it would be a little black box somewhere with a connector or two, and certainly didn't believe it warranted that much money. I decided to tackle it myself.

The phone module is part LLR027985, and it costs £201.14 inc vat. The parts desk sourced it for me in two days. Here's how I (successfully) replaced it.

BEFORE YOU START:
- You'll need a T40 star bit and driver
- You'll need a 10mm socket or spanner
- Removing the old one will cause the radio and sat nav to stop working until you put the new in, so you might want to have the new part ordered before you take the old one out
- This task is easy!

1. Lay the back seats flat (and hoover out the crap you've been carrying for a year)

2. Remove the load bay floor. Open the fuse box to the forward near-side of the spare tyre.

3. Check the fuse. It's the orange 5-amp one in the forward near-side corner of the blue holder.

4. Covering the boot catch is a piece of plastic trim running the width of the boot sill. Get your fingers/screwdriver under the back of it and pull it up and slightly forward. You'll need to pull quite hard. It will release with a pop.

5. On the off-side is a small black tray. Pull it out gently.

6. Just rear of the seatbelt anchor and behind the light cluster are two luggage anchor points. Remove them with your T40 bit. Be careful here - as you remove the bolts it's easy to drop them as the whole assembly gets quite sloppy. If you drop it it will disappear below the subwoofer and you won't be able to retrieve it without a magnet (fortunately I had one).

7. At elbow height on the off-side boot wall is a plastic hook for a luggage net. Twist it through 90 degrees to release it.

8. Peel the rubber boot seal away from the large plastic trim on the off-side boot wall, and get your fingers under the trim. Starting nearest you, pull hard away from the off-side towards the centre of the car. You'll hear a pop as a plastic catch somewhere gives way. Move your hand in behind the trim and pull again. A catch nearer the front (just behind the rear seat catch, I think) will give way and you'll be able to see behind the trim properly. The trim will still be attached at the front, but there's no need to remove it.

9. The bluetooth phone module is the black one on top. The lower orange cables are the optical fibres joining it to the rest of the AV system. The copper cables in the top multi-plug are for power etc. Remove both. The fibre connector has a latch at the bottom. The copper connector has two: push inn the small grey lug in the centre of the back of the connector, then push down the black securing latch. Remove the four bolts at the top and bottom of the unit and withdraw.

10. Swap the four captive nuts from the old part to the new part.

11. Refitting is the reverse of removal.

Well done Realflash on two counts :
i) your pictorial - very professionaly
ii) your choice of car colour although I'm not sure about the beige interior

What I can't understand is that I have blue tooth in my phone, Tom Tom and digital Camera and none of them are anywhere as big as the blue tooth module in the car. Does it do anything else?

I always put my phone near the dashboard for better connectivity' Maybe I should be putting it in the boot?

So what does fitting a new module do? will it allow newer phones to connect? or will it allow streaming music like in a later FL2 HSE? 138,000 miles & counting
