P0253 DTC, Non starting

Good day fellow FL2 owners,

The wife's 2013 SD4 died on her at a stop street out of the blue with no prior indication. Me back at home from the UAE started looking, checking all the error codes (DTC's) and clearing all I could.

Two codes remained and would not get erased: P0253 and another one stating water in fuel.

I replaced the fuel filter, and check for any trace of water by emptying the old filter in a glass jar. No water visible except for a few pieces of dirt particles. Pulled vacuum on the new filter until all traces of air have gone.

Replaced the crank position sensor with a new one from LR. Still no starting. Then I removed and checked for corrosion on all the connectors that I could lay my hands on (injectors, fuel rail, throttle body and many others). Still no indication of starting.

The battery is replaced with a new one and charged overnight before I started the work above. So battery and low voltages ruled out.

Then I googled the P0253 error code and found the following: https://www.obd-codes.com/p0253#:~:text=Th...t%20issue.

A very good website describing in a generic way the typical functions and fault finding techniques. So I traced and found a sensor on the main injector pump (side of cylinder head). Tried to get the connector off but very awkward position and could only wriggle it a bit.

She started immediately and have been fine until now, but the great mistrust has settled in as I have not really find anything very specific wrong. (Will remove the connector when I get the car on a ramp and do the measurements with a multi-meter as described in the link above).

So my question with this is have anyone experienced the same and have a clear solution?

Wiggling the connector could have solved your problem, but you need to look at it properly, for signs of corrosion/damaged wiring etc.

A good quality bi-directional scanner needs to be part of your tool kit if you do your own maintenance these days, and a scope if you can stretch to it! (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Hi Badger51,

Many thanks for your reply. Yes, surely that is in pipeline to take the connector off and check it out properly. I also noted that the exhaust runs quite closely direct below this connector and its wiring.

I use the iCarsoft LR2 scanner but is does not show the secondary codes for DTC's. Thank you also for the link.

Could you point me to a good quality bi-directional scanner? I do all my maintenance self and regard a couple of good bucks for a proper scanner is money well spent.
