P1204 Reduced performance. Intermittent

2009 TD4
Had this happen a couple of times in recent days.
Driving along no problem, then for no apparent reason engine looses power. Engine will rev ok but looses speed.
Pull in, engine off, restart and all ok again.
Today, just driving around same again but this time I had to pull up at a set of lights and engine stopped via stop start system.
Pressed clutch and engine started, all power back again.

Scanned for codes and P1204 injector 4 open circuit or short to ground.

I have recently had the injector plugs disconnected whilst doing other work. Rechecked the plugs today appeared ok. Sprayed the contacts with contact cleaner and but a small amount of dielectric grease on each contact.
Been out again for a test and same again.
I can only assume that there must be a break in one of the plug wires to number 4 injector.
Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Hi Gasman

Yep had those symptoms a couple of times with injector no.3 (P1203) & injector no.4 (P1204).
After an expensive trip to a LR indy in Bristol (before the CAZ came in Rolling Eyes ) came up with the advice, take it to diesel injection specialist, which I duly did who took out the injector & bench tested on "specialist" equipment with no fault found.
Paid more money took it away, on the way home into limp mode again, took it back, service exchange Bosch piezo injector fitted & coded, more money paid - fault cured.

18 months later injector no.4 did the same, so bit the bullet & ordered a service exchange injector from PF Jones (approx £229) and changed it myself & coded it using my Autel AP tool. The whole job no more difficult than changing a spark plug on a petrol car, only difference the price of the components. Plus it saves having to pay someone to do it.

I've no doubt the other two will pack up at the most inconvenient time Very Happy so I will have to spend the dosh and do it again.

It seems these piezo injectors are complex pieces of electronic kit and inevitably break down.

I appreciate you taking the time to reply and relate you similar issues.
Long story short, you are spot on.
Just before I read your post, thought I would have a bit of a poke around.
Checked the electrical connection, that appeared to be ok.
Checked the resistance of the injector and found it to be just less than 50 k ohms. Correct reading being between 160 and 200 k ohms.
As it was difficult to get my meter connected, tried the others. They were reading around 180 k ohms.
So as you say, duff injector.
What is annoying me, I'm almost sure they were all changed in December 2021.
Car was at a specialist L/R independent for a starting issue. They said it was the injectors. Sent them off to a specialist who tested them and reported that all were faulty.
I can't remember if they were replaced with new or refurbished ones. What I do remember was it was going to be in the region of £1200.
In the end I wasn't changed anything as the garage couldn't find the original issue and the owner said it wouldn't be fair to change for work they couldn't fix.

Think I'll try and contact the injector specialist and see what they say. Never know they may be able to refurbish this one or do an exchange.

I'd just buy new ones. New injectors are about 25% more expensive than reconditioned, and will have a much longer life. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

I just been doing some research and as usual you are right.
That's what I'll be doing. Going to check on Monday with the people who did it last time, see if they can supply one.
I'll be looking for some information on how to code it to the ECU with SDD. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.

Hi gasman.
Did you follow the advice above and did it solve your problem for you? did you have all four new injectors and were they coded to the car
