Starting Issues

A technical question for all you kind folks. Just after Xmas I went to start the car and it was -8 ⁰ outside. After lots of turning over it finally started (5mins). But ever since it struggles to start. No matter what the temp is. I've changed the battery to an higher amp one. No difference. I've had the codes read the only thing that shows is P0380 open circuit A.
I refuse to believe that one cold spell can take out all the glow plugs. Any one any ideas before I start throwing money at it.
Its like the Battery is flat and cant turn the engine over at full speed.

Maybe is the glow plug relay. If its broken none of the glow plugs get heated. The relay is located in tje fuse box under the bonet. Diagram is pictured on the back of the cover fuse box.

Would that affect starting even when its 10-15 deg outside as well?

Hi, there has been mention on here recently,
where the slow/poor starting issues have been
resolved by starter motor replacement, given the
age of the car and number of time the starter has
been used, then this could well be your problem,

I take it you have a second battery earthing strap?

is this not a common issue and why most people fit the second earth strap, from battery to starter? Stewart

I Have a second earth strap coming today. I would have though a starter Motor would last a lot longer then 75k my daughter has just sold her my59 on 150k with original starter.
Though i am wondering if the starter is the issue the way it struggles to spin.

No, as most of us who've got to the point of having the "HDC Not available" message along with reset of mileage etc, just get clicking noises. The starter motor doesn't even turn over as there is insufficient charge in the battery. A jump start, booster pack or charge the battery and use SWMBO's ST3 while it charges and normal service is resumed and the car starts on the button.
If the starter can turn over the engine for 5 minutes, the battery is well charged. Struggling to start at 10-15° is a different problem.

Look at the rev counter when you try and start the car. If the starter is OK it should turn the engine over at approx 200rpm. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Nice to hear did you replace the starter or get the kit to repair it, which is quite easy really.

I bought a new one time was of the essence.I picked one up with next day delivery, I think it was from advance factors.
It took about 30 mins to fit. All the contacts had corroded on the old one and it was over 10 years old.
