2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Zermatt Silver
Fuel Filter Change

i've ordered all the parts to service my 07 td4 and after the best part of an hour searching the forum I am looking for the answer to the following

with regards the fuel filter change is there any other way to prime it with out "priming bulb tool"? as i dont fancy parting with the best part of £200!

when i've messed with other motors that diddn't self prime - i would try not to loose the diesel in the fuel pipes, then fill the filter up with diesel and fit it.

obviuosly there was some air in the system but it never bothered it and must of cleared any air out.....


is this a good idea for my fl2? or has someone got a better idea? Wink

Draper do a diesel priming pump for £26, I was also wondering about this problem. Page 97 I think in there catalog also seen them on ebay!

The thing about filling the filter first is that you are introducing unfiltered fuel to the clean side of the filter, not clever with modern CR systems, many engine manufacturers now fit the fuel filters upside down to prevent such practices At work

£26 sounds more like it - did loads of searches last night and nothing came up - well nothing car related when i typed "special pump tool"!! Shocked

CG - cheers, the penny really didn't drop on that one - especially if the modern engines don't like it and TBH i hadn't looked if the pump was upside down - the pump one i did was a 2.3 sierra est back in the late 90's (can't believe i just typed late 90's like it was a long time ago!) Laughing

SS- went through loads of your posts last night, they where really helpfull but i couldn't find how to do it without some kind of pump - which were coming in at £100+ Thumbs Up

going to have a look through the online draper catalogue now.......

Depends how rough you want to be ?

Disconnect air filter and spay in "Easy Start" while cranking the engine, the engine will run on what is essentially ether, the increased engine speed will drag the fuel through.

Saw it done recently on a 130 that had ripped a fuel line of when off-roading.
Not pretty, and if stuck I would do it, but LR might not condone it

Easy start is known as "knock knock" - if you have used it you will know why Twisted Evil Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

easy start method involves cranking with no fuel in the injectors and pump, not recommended either, but as you said it is the rough method of starting

Doesn't turning the ingnition on without starting the engine run the pump at all (like theFL1)?

Could you not leave the priming pump in circuit or would it cause fuel flow problems - I also drive a 2lt HDI dipatch van with a very simular filter and the priming pump is perminately fitted?

Indeed, but you can fill it carefully through the intake port, the one that has a white plastic around it.
See the pictures on the post bellow, where you can observe the internals of the fuel filter.

Nope.
Inside the tank there is, indeed, an electric pump, but it only equalize the level of fuel between the two sections of the tank.
The lift pump is mechanical and is part of (in the same body with) the high pressure pump.

Yes, it's a gear type pump and is mounted to the rear of the HP fuel pump.

Folks,

If anyone buys the Draper Priming Pump could they post some info on here. Interesting to see what additional hoses / connections are required. Mine will need changing at the four year service September time and am looking at doing the service myself. I wonder how much a garage (indi or dealer) would charge to change the fuel filter on it's own?
