Power Steering Issues.

So my Landy has been diagnosed as needing a new Steering Rack.

Before I splash out on the rack was going to try some Seafoam Trans Tune - anyone had any success using this stuff?


If thats no good then a new rack and pipework and reservoir. Seen there is a big price difference between suppliers.
Cheapest appears to be Elstock at £276
then increasing to around +£500

Anyones to avoid?

What are the symptoms?

Personally, reservoir would be the place to start, and a fluid flush before moving onto the expensive items.

I started using this back in 2019 with a groaning clunky steering after replacing the reservoir and flushing... tried it simply as a stop gap to eek out as much life from the system while money was tight. Sucked out most of the reservoir and top up with this, noises and clunks 99% stopped. And she's still going strong. I'll put another blob in whenever i do a flush. While i'm not one for most additives, this is one of the ones i'm happy to have on the shelf. Fully expect to have to do the rack properly at some point, but for the time being.... good enough.

I don't think I would put seafoam into the power steering system, I've done it with engines but never PS....how do you get it all out unless you do a full flush. Do you think you have a blocked channel/ pathway?

The reservoir has a filter built in, this filter is not serviceable and in time blocks. Once the filter blocks the oil pump is starved and eats itself, shedding metal fragments into the system. These metal fragments damage the steering rack, the ones that get returned to the reservoir block the filter even further escalating the damage.

So change the oil every year, change the reservoir very two or three years. If the rack is making a lot of noise then it's too late and it's time to change the steering rack.

Of course there is always the odd one out, the idler pulley can seize making it look as if the power steering has failed - ask me how I know  Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
