Gear selector led lights not working

I sold my last Freelander last year, I missed her so much that I bought another one and I’m straight back to fixing things that fail.

This seems to be a tricky one. The little led lights next to the automatic gear change lever have stopped working, actually they weren’t working on pick up.

I’ve taken the surround off to check that the led unit hasn’t dropped off and all is good. I’ve tested the led’s on the board with a multimeter. My next step would be to check the output from the ribbon connector lead, but not sure how to do this properly.

I wondered if it is the lever position sensor not working but that seems to be hidden down the bottom of the gear selector unit - lots of plastic! I could just buy a new selector unit from flea bay and try that, but they aren’t cheap and I suspect that would be a big job.

Anyone got any ideas or a diagram that shows me the location of the gear position sensor that lights up the leds?

The gear position indicator on the dash works showing D, R etc. so I don’t think it’s the main unit. Is there a fuse somewhere. I’ve checked number 52 behind the glove compartment which I read somewhere may be it.

Thanks in anticipation.

I noticed this is an old post and unanswered.

I have the same question in that my MY 2013 S4 gear selector indicating lights have died.

Anyone with advice please?

Thanks. 2013 SD4 SE (hers)

Previous owner had damaged the ribbon cable going to the lights on mine, had been squished and bunch of the wires broken. Keep meaning to get around to fixing that, but barely even notice it now.

Apologies for late reply to say thank you for the advice (been relocating to the UAE for work and completely forgotten about this).

Many thanks for the advice and the video!
