Insurance hike horror

2010 HSE auto
Just received my renewal from Directline.
Up from £552 to £935.
Almost 100% increase. Will speak to them today then go on the roundabout with all the others.
Ridiculous, clean licence, never ever had a claim, 5k annually .
Need the car as we are rural.
Wish me luck, people. Jim A

How do you get these low quotes?
As said, live in a rural part of Scotland.
However I am now 82 and convinced once we get over 80 everything is loaded against us.
Best renewal I have so far is 1st Central at £651.
Any body dealt with 1st Central?
For first time ever thinking about monthly payments.
Will keep you all updated
Thanks

I think you’re right all part of the pleasure of getting older. I think it’s to price us off of the road with out making it a law. A way of cutting car numbers on the roads

I just got a renewal through from More Than (Aviva online basically) for £290 which was only a slight increase on last year, I was pleasantly surprised by that (for 2014 SE Tech car). I'm still in the "supposedly safer" age range though. I'm in Hull as well which doesn't have the best car crime stats.

Hi Jim, like you I've had to go with 1st Central, no experience of them so fingers crossed,
I did read a lot of the hike was because of the floods,
Mine more than doubled this spring even though I hold advanced driver cetificates,
not quite in my eighties yet, but getting there. DAVE.

I too had a large increase with Direct line, when i phoned them and explained that i had been with them for years, that my wifes car is with them along with our house insurance they said that it's because it's a Land Rover, i pointed out that it's a Freelander not any expensive Range Rover or Discovery and that it has the lowest theft and recalls, they dropped the price to about £25.00 more then last year so i'm very happy until next years battle again. Common sense isn't very common.

Once you it 65 or over the insurance rises, even if you have never made a claim or had any accident, basically it is age discrimination, so no different to gender or colour discrimination, it should not be allowed by law, it needs looking into.

You can maybe get it down a little by having a named driver, check out money supermarket and the like, for better deals, also ask about the age discrimination see what they say.

I am suffering from AGE discrimination, and have noticed that also the following things that are not in my favour when it comes to Car Insurance.

I am 82.

I have only one car in household.

I am now the only driver in household, or on the policy.

I still do 8000 miles a year.

Although I have 60+ years on my full manual and auto licence, it restricted to 3 Years Medically Declared for eye condition.

-- Although I have No Convictions or 16 years NCB my Fully Comp SAGA insurance now stands at £1200+ - Note it does cover most things apart from Breakdown.

PS My SAGA quote for a 2021 DS PHEV is over double that! FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

My dad is 91, lives alone, fully independent, drives a 16 year old C class Merc, does 3K miles, never drives at night now. Lives in rural Yorkshire. No public transport around. Its 4 miles up a the hill (20% in parts) to the church and village shops. He's dreading having to give up the car, despite insurance costing much more than the car is worth.

I wonder how much a taxi would cost to and from the Sunday morning service? Jules
