Alpine ProLogic II 7.1 Surround Sound System - What's wrong?

I recently bought a Freelander 2 HSE. I bought the HSE rather than the SE on the strength of the Alpine Dolby ProLogic II 7.1 surround sound system which was supposed to be a ground breaking in car system. Having had it for a couple of months I am pretty disappointed – at best it sounds really abrasive and at worst it sounds like the drive units are struggling to deliver bass and mid range. I have turned up the sub woofer to compensate but its not sounding good. Has anyone else had problems and if so how did you solve them?

Turn surround sound effect up to maximum and add as much base as you can to the source, but not on the head unit, only +1 or +2. I play most non radio music via my ipod and have the equalizer on the pod set to bass booster. 58 HSE, auto, lago grey, tints. Mine and my dogs Storm and Sky

I added the Infinity Basslink to the system to compensate for the lack of bass. With some adjustments for your own personal tastes, the system can sound pretty well balanced. I didn't particularly have any issues with the highs and mids.

Thanks for the replies - two good suggestions I'll have a try.
