Ive been running two different monitors on my PC for years.

Recently changed the graphics card to a much more powerful one (Nvidia 3070RTX). The main monitor is fine but the 2nd (extended) monitor wont run at its native screen resolution of 1920 x 1200, only lower resolutions. The previous resolution is now not an option in the Windows display settings.

The new graphics is more than capable of achieving this resolution.

The only thing changed besides the graphics card is the cable to the 2nd monitor. It was DVI but now is HDMI (like the main monitor) as the new graphics card doesnt have DVI; only HDMI and DisplayPort connections.

I'm awaiting a HDMI/DVI adapter so I can try the old cable again.

Apart from that I dont know what else to try.

Any suggestions ?

Also putting the old graphics card back in is not an option. Jules

Not sure that I have understood fully your monitor inputs, but should you not be using a 'Display Port' to 'DVI' adaptor/connector/cable?

I had to get a new 2560 x 1600 Dell monitor. Had 2 earlier models. My prehistoric Mac wouldn't run on anything useful on HTML on the new one. Was perfectly ok on the old screens with DVI cable & USB dual setup Mac BS!

So running the old Mac on a Display Port cable.

New Mac via HTML.

Sharing a screen. No need for multiple screens these days.


The HTML adaptors, there are quite a few different versions & a lot only work at low resolution. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

The (digital) video signal is the same with HDMI and DVI. DVI can aditionally carry analog video which HDMI can't. HDMI on the other hand can carry audio and ethernet. Just adding an adaptor will most likely not solve any problems.

I would try:
- swapping cables, maybe one ist weak/faulty
- swapping outputs, connecting the now secondary monitor to the first output and vice versa
- eventually then swap cables again

FWIW old card was a Nvidia 970GTX

Have also tried a brand new HDMI cable.

Have also tried setting 2nd monitor as the primary monitor Jules

A second video card if there is room.

Getting the right cable can be a pain, this link gives an outline of the different protocols.

I noticed that, when your equipment/problem was Googled, quite a few screen resolution problems were solved by finding the correct adaptor/cable.

Things to note are adaptors normally work in one direction, and some cables do have all the pins fully connected. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
