Is 75k miles the average differential life?

After about 7 years good mainly trouble free miles my 2014 FL2 is in the garage for a new Differential.

I have been told that has been accepted as a warranty job by LR Extended Warranty so all those years of paying may be worth it.

From reading the forum I think that this a common mileage for failure.

As I right? FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

If the diff oil has never been changed (so-called "sealed for life") then I think yes.

My 2014 FL2 has done 60K miles, I'm hoping the diff oil changes Ive undertaken will keep it going for a good bit longer. Jules

Three rear diffs from new
First replacement rear diff fitted at 59,000 miles
Second replacement rear diff fitted at 91,000 miles

The last one was replaced by Bell with the uprated bearing now at 136.000 miles. No problems so far, in fact amongst doing other stuff I am replacing the oil tomorrow, counting the original fill that's three oil fills in 44,000 miles.

Mines on 160k miles and still going strong
Changed the PTU and Diff oil at 95k
Thought the diff was on the way out 12 months ago but turned out it was all tyre noise

Most of my driving is cruising on the motorway and similar on open rural roads. As I understand it, the rear diff is unloaded and freewheeling in these conditions, so apart from churning (degrading?) the oil, the wear should be minimal. So it does look like oil condition could be the problem.

I will review my Maintenance/Cost strategy once I get my FL2 back as I intend to keep my Metro for some time yet as it really suits us.

(Note, I am too old to clamber under my car - I was able, as I come from the world of Grease Guns and the like, and was trained to maintain petrol and diesel generators in the Forces) FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

It's not the clambering under the car that's the problem, you can clamber under at any age, it's the getting back up and straightening the back that's the problem my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I replaced my diff once and the original was rebuilt and is sitting in storage. If I ever have to use it, I'll tap a drain plug before install. I had to get a rebuilt one from the UK because they wanted my core plus almost $2000 (+13% tax) Cdn for another rebuilt one. I believe the original lasted 170,000 kms with two oil changes done by me since it was bought used in 2018 December. I now do the oil changes once a year on the replacement rebuild. Easy job..

Ian,

I've got 140,000 miles on the original Diff.

I did upgrade the Gear Oil and I have a magnetic drain plug that collects the Steel dust and I clean off the magnet so that it will catch more particles.

And it is quiet.

I am sure that it is as worn as a 15 year old pair of shoes but it works fine.

So to answer your question

Is 75K the expected lifetime for the differential?

Not if you are Paranoid.

Thanks

Paul

Diff Drain Plug

I think mine is on original diff, and with the added drain plug the oil change is now easy, 103,000

That's 4 diffs, including the one it left the factory with. Thumbs Up

I believe mine is now on its 3rd, the second one seized because there was no oil in it, it was in there long.
Mine has also had replacement PTU, which I believe was fitted at the same time as the seized diff. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Do we know which is the best diff kit to get to refurbish the diff, ie bearings cogs etc, and are they different from an Auto to manual, with what bearings and cogs are used inside the diff.

Will a diff from a 2010 be ok to use in a 2014 so a few questions which would be good to clear up by those with more experience of the diff's.

Confused Confused Not how I wrote it the last two diffs were replacements for the original one making three diffs in total
You now have me anxiously worried about an imminent fourth replacement Smile Smile and thinking of PTUs replacement
