Brake Pad and Brake Disc Wear Limits

Does anyone have the brake pad and brake disc wear limits?

According to the garage my brake pads are 80% worn, but understandably I would to double check myself!

A replacement disc supplier has quoted this :-
Thickness New: 28mm / Minimum: 26mm

As for pads the consensus is between 2mm and 3mm then change.

Jack the car up and take a wheel off one at a time. On the disc there should be stampt marks showing the run out wear limmits on them. Pads, if you look edge on so it looks like the disc is a filling in a sandwhich between the two brake pads you can see if they are well warn or still have plenty of meat on them, theres usualy a run out marked on these too but if not calculating on about 20mm on new pads measure whot is left between the shoulder of the metal part of the brake pad to the edge of the warn brake linning.
If two thirds have been warn away then you should change them soon as. Always replace in full sets for either the front two or rear two wheels. If you let the pad linning run much below this then you run the risk of the rivits that hold the friction material comming into contact with the discs and dammaging them or the pad actual braking up leaving you with no brakes. Thumbs Up

Brake shoes used to be riveted, I thought modern disc pads were bonded ? What if there were no hypothetical situations?

LR are bonded, and not very well either, my first set on the front started to peel away from the backing plate. And all because they weren't sealed around the edge to stop water ingress Rolling Eyes ______________________

This was kinda an interesting topic to read about. There maybe some limitations about the Brake Pad and Brake Disc Wear Limits, but in the end, it's up to you if you use your vehicle very well in order to make thing work and run them in good condition. I hope that all is well by now after reading this one.

I did a search for this and was surprised to find the actual figures asked for were not there! So I searched elsewhere and here they are: (TD4)

Front: New disc 28mm; minimum 26mm. Pad minimum 2mm.

Rear: New disc 12mm; minimum 10mm. Pad minimum 2mm. Shoes minimum 1mm.

Old basic rule when cars were serviced every 6 months or 6000 mls was,
If friction material is near to same thickness as metal back plate its time to change.
We now have 1 year or 15000mls between service, so garage will err on safety side. All FL2's (3) Gone

Remember how in the old days you would send your discs away to be skimmed if they got a bit corroded? A local garage owner in the village years ago told me about grinding pads which had a layer of carborundum on them. I had never heard of them so he ordered some for me and I fitted them. Horrible grinding noises for a few miles then all OK and nice shiny discs. Of course in those days with asbestos pads the pads would wear out a lot faster than the discs. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
