Tailgate handle - help before it falls off

Hi all,

The tailgate handle on my 2009 Freelander 2 was not rock solid and now my over zealous wife has popped it out at least two of its back clips. I am having to be super careful now not to rip the whole lot off.
Any ideas on my next action? I have watched some YouTube videos and am happy knowing how to remove whole unit.
I am reluctant to have to fork out on a whole new moulding if I can can avoid it as they look a bit pricey.

Thanks in advancešŸ‘

I repaired mine by plastic welding (using an old soldering iron) and painted it.

Thanks Imran, decent job that with the spraying. Did you look into the alternatives to a weld? I must say I am tempted to take a handle off a whole tailgate, which breakers are flogging for Ā£60 not so far from me.

Probably easier to replace the tail gate handle with a sound one than repair fractures with plastic welding. Though you can buy a variety of different shaped plastic weld staples which make a solid join.
I repaired the headlamp brackets on my Fiesta that way.

Which clips have broken. Its held on with a few bolts, isnt it. Jules

i went with a repair for two reasons.
1) Any 2nd hand ones of that style will be pretty old now so probably about to break anyway. So I might as well fix the one I had.
2) I had the stuff and I am cheap Wink

If I was to go with a replacement I think I would get one of the newer, longer style. Back when I was looking powerfulUK were selling them for around Ā£100 on ebay. Don't know if they still are though. FL2 2007 2.2d Auto SE. Baltic Blue.

I replaced mine with the later facelift type, which is much better looking (IMO) and better secured to the tail door. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.
