One recommendation: Grab a couple of genuine LR000055 top nuts or re-use the originals, as the ones that come with the BWI struts may not fully tighten down on the top strut mount Current driveway contents:

I've owned my 2008 LR2 since new (15 years) and I have replaced the Fronts with Bilstein B4 and they are very close to what LR2 was like when new. I have the rears but I need to find the time to replace them. I do have 18" wheels The B4's will give you a ride that is very similar to what Land Rover intended. Note: if your original shocks/struts are very worn then going back to like new will be noticeably stiffer this will be true for any OEM type Shock/Strut. One last thought: if you get B6 instead of B4 then the ride will be very stiff. The LR2 ride is really nice in my opinion and I am happy with the B4's Take care Paul |

Are you doing the job yourself or getting a garage to do it? If doing yourself I would also renew the top mounts.. I had a devils own job trying to remove the top nuts as described previously as the nuts had effectively welded themselves onto the strut.. you couldn’t use heat as the nut was recessed within the mount and the top mounts would be damaged… I had to physically drill them off to be able to release the springs.. |

If getting the garage to do them you could take out (& re install) the boot panels yourself to save 30 minutes of work if they have never done a Freelander before (at least you will know for yourself that when you put them back in that there are no broken clips).

I have replaced rear shocks in a previous life on a Peugeot 504 with air shocks & added onboard air compressor. It's a bit of work first time round. Take your time & buy the proper size ring spanners etc if you don't have them. Don't use adjustable spanners. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

If you are doing a full rebuild and want to replace the rubber insulators, note that the earlier cars used an "open" rubber spring seat/insulator under the top mount, while later cars used a rubber seat with a defined captive channel that ensures the spring aligns properly and can't move sideways/off-centre when releasing the spring clamps.
Old part: LR005304 New part: LR029020 While the parts cat. defines a VIN range, there were no changes to springs or top mounts at that build, so this is an improved part that makes seating/installing the springs a LOT easier on earlier cars. Current driveway contents: 2021 V60 Cross Country B5 2009 FL2 dog bus and shooting wagon On Order: 2023 Fisker Ocean Ultra - deposit paid. |

Lightwater, That is a very helpful suggestion. I took this approach when it came time to replace my windshield I removed the wipers and the panel under them so that the technicians could focus on the windshield. That is a very helpful tip. Take care Paul |
