Auto gearbox question

Hello everyone!
I have just put a deposit down on a 2011 FL2 auto and hope I haven’t made a mistake!
I had been looking for an S Max and had been warned off any “powershift” auto, because of plastic internals that are prone to failure. I’ve just seen the FL2 now also referred to as a “powershift”.
Should I be worried?
Any help gratefully received 👍

I’m hoping that 15 views and no replies might be a cause for some optimism?…

Generally the Freelander 2 auto box is reliable. The torque converter clutch can cause a shudder when it engages, but other box issues aren't common. It's important the fluid is changed long before LR say it should though. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

I’ll get the gearbox oil changed ASAP 👍
I did try and post some photos but, sadly, no luck!

hi
they are great vehicles i hope you enjoy yours Thumbs Up

As has been mentioned fluids such as gearbox, haldex, rear diff and PTU can and should be changed.
I went to bells autos for my haldex and rear diff oil change and had dealer change auto box and i did PTU.
Also, correct oil and if possible genuine filters and you will be good to go.
As for gearbox i regularly put mine in sport mode and use command shift just to make sure all is ok.

Also...so much better than driving a battery (EV) Whistle

Nice looking car.
I see that in addition to the HSE configuration you have the Premium Pack seats, I take it that was a forerunner the HSE Lux.

Auto gearbox question

I agree with the Nodge68, you certainly cannot leave the auto gearbox oil to landrover’s spec on longevity, plus what was interesting from another forum member a view months ago that the dirty oil can wear out the valve chest and other smaller components of the gearbox if left too long.
Although putting off the task for a while thinking about changing the gearbox oil is tedious actually it wasn’t, I did the dump and fill method and after the gear changes are so smooth they are so unnoticeable.
That was April 2022. 145,885 miles. Although the gear changes were smooth with no error.

I also replaced the gearbox fill and drain plugs too, I am this year changing the oil again as being curious to the colour because it denotes the condition of the friction linings of the internals, some may think it’s a waste of time and money but you can’t be too careful with these gearboxes plus I tow a rather heavy caravan and the prospect of France and Spain touring is on the horizon, my freelander has now done 156,225 miles. Cambelt and water pump already done last month and the belt was shown signs of perishing too, so that’s a well done job again.

Hi, for me auto every time. I have a 2010 HSE auto with 123k miles.
Had it nearly two years. First thing I did was have every oil changed and a kit from Bell.
Tomorrow I drive 320 odd miles to Solihull to LR for the factory tour, then the National Motorcycle Museum.. Because I am down that far I am booked into Bell for s full Haldex service.
No qualms about the distance with the car. I also now 81 and not bothered with the drive.
An old boss many years ago told me “Oil is cheap,an engine isn’t,t”
Enjoy your Freelander . Jim A

The Aisin AWTF-80 SC is used by a *lot* of manufacturers and is generally a solid unit subject to periodic fluid flushes.

While Ford used this box for a time in the Mondeo and Galaxy, it never appeared in the S-Max.

Powershift is a Ford branded auto box, made in partnership with Getrag. The branding was used for a number of variations, the problematic ones being fitted to Fiesta, Focus and EcoSport with a less robust dry clutch. The version fitted in the S-Max is not known to be particularly troublesome, but shared the same brand name. Internet "joining the dots" means that problems with a different box with the same branding suddenly becomes "they'll all explode, we're going to die I tell you!" and Keith on the Ford Forum doubles down with his mates to create this illusion of knowledge based on dOiNg ThEiR oWn ReSuRcH. "Yeah, them Poweshift boxes, all rubbish mate" based on half reading an article on a different car with a different version of the gearbox.

tl;dr
PowerShift is a Ford brand name for the gearboxes they build with Getrag. Versions fitted to Focus, EcoSport and Fiesta were troublesome. Other versions no more nor less reliable than most other auto boxes. PowerShift has nothing at all to do with the Aisin box fitted to the FL2. Current driveway contents:

2009 FL2 dog bus and shooting wagon

On Order: 2023 Fisker Ocean Ultra - deposit paid.

Collection day is Friday and then over to my ever understanding LR specialist for him to look it over and do a gearbox oil change and check the diff / Haldex.
