Kerb Weights

Is there anyone on this forum who knows the exact kerb weights of the varying models of FL2

I presently have a FL2 57 Plate SE manual but I might be crossing to the Dark side (prepares to be flamed) of Auto. I am lead to beleive that autos are heavier etc.

Reason for asking is as I tow all Caravan places quote the base 1775 kg

I recall reading somewhere that manual and automatic unladen weights differ by 15 kg or so. It may have been in the techy data section in the handbook?

I thought the FL2 was good for towing 2000kg, anything less is a matter of guidelines (like Caravan club 85%).

In legal terms its all down to what the manufacturer states is the limit. Other than that guidelines (CC or anyones else's) are just that ....guidelines ... In the real world if you get pulled over by plod or vosa then all that matters is what is on the vehicle plate ....

What you need to be aware of is axle weights and gross train weight, that is all the enforcement authorities can go by. Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor Smile ... but not any more ... Big Cry ... psst look at my gallery!

Legally you cant tow something heavier than the car so to tow 2000kg the car would need to be loaded so it weighed at least 2000kg, BUT i would not recommend it. ideally I wouldnt tow more than 1750kg

My old 3.5 tonne sprinter van that weighs 2.1 ton unladen had a train weight of 5.5 tonnes but I'm sure a LWB defender can tow more.

IMHO the kerbweight is an irrelevance or at least a distraction, what matters is the actual weight of the vehicle when towing and the actual weight of the trailer being towed (NOT the MTPLM)

Take the TD4 HSE towing a Fleetwood Heritage

Kerb Weight 1770kg , MTPLM 1750kg = 98.87% match

BUT Actual Weights could be

TD4 - 2000kg Van - 1600kg this gives a 80% match

also to be considered is a 4x4 is a more stable tower and if the caravan is twin axle this also helps

Agree that kerb weight is a distraction. Many vehicles have a towing capacity greater than the vehicle own weight, Land Rovers are classic for that (even if it is not the case for the FL2)

The caravan club and other organizations make great play about towing ratios, for which yes you do need to know the kerb weight (in which case go for about 1700kgs for the FL2) but towing and focusing on the car to trailer ratio is really only part of the story. Weight distribution and hitch down force are at least if not more important. You can have a car/trailer outfit that meets the 85% guide line but with poor weight distribution in the trailer end up with hitch down load force which is down right dangerous. Where you could tow at 100% with good hitch loading and be far more stable.

If you are stopped at the road side kerbweight will not be an issue. The plated axle weight of the car and trailer are what the enforcement authorities will go by. Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor Smile ... but not any more ... Big Cry ... psst look at my gallery!

Kerb weight - The weight of a car with no passengers or luggage but with a full fuel tank.

Page 212 in the owners handbook gives you the info. So based on the above, you're looking at the Approximate unladen weight which is 1825Kg if its petrol, or 1820 if its diesel. No mention of the type of gearbox anywhere. ______________________

Here are the tech specs of FL2, including weights:

https://www.freel2.com/gallery/albums/user..._specs.pdf

And here are the informations about towing:

https://www.freel2.com/gallery/albums/user...towing.pdf

What is to be taken in consideration is that for the Diesel Auto version, that maximum weight with overrun brakes is not 2000kg (as for Petrol and Diesel Manual), but 1750kg.
See: http://www.landyonline.co.za/specs/freelander2007_specs.htm

The registration certificate for my FL2 XS auto diesel gives
''a mass in service'', which I believe is kerb weight,
as being 1970 Kilograms. Add the weight of the tow bar,
say 30 kilos and I reckon I am 2000 kilos unladen.

Hope this helps.
