If you can open the liftgate by either holding the two buttons on the dash, or by pressing the liftgate button on the fob, then the issue is the microswitch (easy fix).

Be aware that it's possible for the latch to unlock but the gate seem shut and locked because the rubber rain seals got sticky... pull firmly. If your seals stick, lube them with talcum powder or silicone spray.
