Call around your local car repairers & ask if they they have “chassis ears”, they will identify the issue straight away. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

So I got a little bit of time to have a look at the diff area. I was surprised to find it was quite oily but on the Haldex side and more on the shrouds around The diff/Haldex rather than on those units themselves making me wonder if a seal has gone and it’s has lost the diff oil. I’ve never pulled the Haldex or diff apart, any suggestions/ideas as to what it could be?

Certainly looks like oil coming out of the weep hole, which means a seal has failed, possibly related to diff bearing failure.

I got a set from one of usual shopping suspects and it’s been an invaluable tool. You can get them for about £100. Worth every penny as they have saved a lot of hassle diagnosing stuff. Try searching for “electronic stethoscope” “chassis ears” and “steelman ears”. My ones have multiple sensors with long cables so you can put them on a bunch of stuff and go for a drive. |

I have had FL2s with noisy rear diff, noisy rear wheel bearing and noisy tyres and they all sounded the same to me. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Many thanks for the advice and contributions. I have concluded it is a diff and have started the process of ordering a reconditioned one... |
