engine oil change

I understand you need to have front end on ramps to change oil but is that simply down to access to sump plug or does it drain better like this??
Also, once done and when you check oil level this is back down on level ground?
Haynes manual doesn't mention driving off ramps to check level!

My old defender was simple, crawl under remove sump plug and drain Laughing

Managed to get 12 litre bottles of castrol professional c1 (ford spec 934,recommended by LR) for £103 plus vat and postage, so that's 2 years oil sorted Very Happy

If you can get access with it on the ground, go for it. It must be on level ground to check oil level though. Thumbs Up Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

That seems expensive for the oil. I use this:

Will drain a bit more if up on front ramps but nothing great. I use Triple QX from Eurocarparts always buy it when on offer, was £19 for 5L a few months back.

I've used, Castrol Edge C1 for the last 6 year's but that's going to cost over £80 from Germany for 7 ltrs.
Thanks for the flag up on this, I think Castrol and I will be partying company.

This offer is 12 litre bottles (2 years worth of servicing) for a total of £136 which includes VAT and postage.
So that works out to be Just over £10 per litre for the best oil....no brainer!!

£8 a litre here inc delivery.

Just because it is Castrol does not make it better than other makes.

That works out at £4 a litre , for 20L, delivered so not a bad price at all. No need to pay silly prices for Castrol.

Its all relative, i think this is a good price for castrol oil and i will use it.
I suppose we are talking about costs not quality, if oil was free ( Rolling with laughter ) would you still choose cheap oil??

Silly arguement. If an oil meets a spec that is the end of it. Whether it costs£4 or £10 a litre will do the same job.

I dont think there is any data to confirm that an expensive oil is any better than a cheaper of the same spec.
If there was evidence then surely the big brand names would publish it to show how good their oils were over cheaper competitors.

Rather like "super" diesel fuel - snake oil IMO Jules
