Haldex bench service

Haldex bench service.

I've taken the haldex unit out for a service.

It is the right age to be original to the vehicle and the bolts felt like they'd never been undone!

Removing the filter cap revealed a lot of white powder between the white plastic and the cap.

The oil itself didn't look too bad. A video I watched of a Volvo getting serviced at 30k had a lot darker oil. This seemed to be about half way in-between. However ours has done 180k so I'm guessing it has had the fluid replaced before. (We've owned it for the last 10k and it hasn't been touched in that time)

The small mesh filter on the end of the pump was completely gunked up though with black sludge and there was more black think in the housing that the pump came out of.

So that is the point I'm at, as far as I know the haldex unit is working but I don't really know as the PTU splines have gone so it hasn't been using the haldex for the last few thousand miles.

What would you do from this point? I have a service kit ready, but would you go any further? Would you flush it out with anything?

What do people clean the mesh filter on the pump with?

I think your haldex is Gen 3. Its a little different to Gen 4.

The pump filter is much the same though. I removed it from the pump and washed it in petrol. Be careful not to undo all the screws as the pump itself will fall off the end plate and lots small parts drop out. So only remove the screw/s holding the filter to the plate.

I didnt flush my haldex just cleaned out the pump housing and housing on the rear diff that the hladex sits inside.

There are some detailed videos on utube showing further haldex dismantling, cleaning and rebuilding but most are not in English Jules

Mine is a gen 4 handed unit:

The filter housing is round the top rather than next to the pump.

I've watched the Russian video, I don't think I want to go that far.

I've removed the flange, removed the pump, taken off the small filter, taken out the large filter.

I remember reading a post from Austen about only using paraffin based cleaner, so need to see if I can get something paraffin based, then I'll give it a bit of a clean through and reassemble.

If I had the unit off I would strip it down and clean.

Paraffin based cleaner = Paraffin.

I was told by an LR indie that it's important to dry the plates thoroughly before refitting.

When I had the Haldex serviced by Austen he certainly had the clutch pack apart and rinsed the plates and housing. The plastic filter was changed and the pump filter cleaned. He was also able to run the pump wet on the bench to check for flow.

Ended up just using compressed air to clean it all out.

All reassembled, out back on and filled up. Just need to take 70ml out once it has been running for 5 mins.
