What purpose does this glove box bulb serve?

I had occasion to take the glove box out and found a bulb holder, complete with bulb, dangling from the space above the glove box. It clearly isn’t intended to just hang there and I eventually located a hole in the frame above the closing edge of the lid into which the bulb holder slotted (although I couldn’t manage to get the locking ring fitted).

This isn’t the bulb that comes on when you open the glove box that is operated by the little plunger; this one comes on with the interior lights when you unlock the car, and goes out with them either when you lock the car or the interior lights go out automatically. So what purpose does it serve?

I’d wondered about that too, but it’s contained within the glove box so I can’t see that the light would get to the footwell. As it’s starting to get dark here in Norn Iron I might pop out and see if there’s any sign of light getting through from the glove box.

Edit: Of course I might have refitted it in the wrong place but the bulb holder did slot into the hole which had two notches which accommodated the tabs on the side of the bulb holder.

Hmmm …. I have no footwell light so it would seem that I’ve put the bulb in the wrong place. So where should it be mounted?

Should the bulb fit in backwards?

What an interesting idea. Yes, I imagine it could although then it would be pointing upwards rather than towards the footwell.

On mine the footwell lights are where you would expect them - pointing downwards, located in rather cheap looking plastic holders. Jules

I will have to look in the glove box.

The footwell lights are stapled onto the vent. The Freelander "pauper" models, they simply leave the globes out. The keeping up with the Joneses models they stick in a couple of bulbs!

We actually took the footwell globes out due to remote outback battery preservation issues. Same with the uselessly located boot light. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Jules,

Could you explain where I’d locate the plastic holder? Is it behind the glovebox?

This is the driver's side, but it is the same as the passenger side. Vent at top of photo. Footwell holder attached to vent (bulb removed).

Many thanks. I’ll have a good look at those pictures this evening when I get home.

It’ll be the weekend before I can get to the FL2 again but many thanks for the photo showing the bulb holder. Methinks I’ll have to take the glovebox out again.
