2014 freelancer 2 sd4 auto thud whe engaging drive from park

I reversed out of a space today and put my foot on the brake, then selected drive when I took my foot of the brake and was about to drive away there was a thud coming from the back of the car as the drive was engaging, has anybody had this issue.

Just a guess but I would suggest that the transmission oil is due replacement.
The same transmission is used on several vehicles and other manufacturers suggest oil replacement at 50-70,000 miles. 8 years between oil changes does seem a long time.

Of course it could be the splines on the PTU are letting go, mine didn't suddenly go, they slipped a few times first.
Maybe the Haldex playing silly devils - these also like having the oil and filter changed.

Originally LR said that the gearbox, PTU, Haldex, and differential oils were all fitted for life - ie, when the oil failed so did the equipment. Later this was amended, bit of a pain as the differential and PTU don't actually have drain plugs.

But cheapest and most likely is the gearbox oil, if you leave it too long it also becomes the most expensive. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

I did have these thuds a couple of years ago, then they went away, Ford 2.0L ecoboost petrol engine, MY13 68,000km mostly straight roads with a headwinds in the outback. City driving 5k km at most for the total kms of the car. If the issue ever resurfaces I will ask my mechanic. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
