EGR removal 2014 SD4 - easy ??

Currently in North Yorkshire on holiday - cycling the Way of the Roses.

Ive now got "restricted performance" on my 2014 SD4 (44K miles). It is running OK and engine and gearbox behave as normal about from the imposed performance restriction. No obvious signs of turbo hose leak.

Once I get it home on friday I'll check for fault codes via the OBD. But Im assuming its the EGR valve.

IIRC My EGR unit is different from earlier models (now at the the rear of the engine I think) and not covered by the JLR freebie service manual or Haynes.

In anticipation of spending the weekend working on the car, how easy is it to remove and replace/clean the EGR on later models with DPF ? Any links or pics would be helpful. Jules

Is it LR00097 that I need ?

I can only find one sort of EGR valve .

Yes I will - they are about £200 delivered.

Is there anything special I should know about the process or is it obvious which order things have to come off to get at the EGR valve. Jules

So this is weird.
On Wednesday drove for nearly 2 hours with "restricted performance" and having to use Commnad Shift gear changes to keep the revs below 2K in order to make progress up hills. Didnt use the car on Thursday. Today the fault had cleared when I started the car and it didnt reappear during the drive down the M6. The engine and gearbox felt fine.

At home I found no faults codes with my Torque Pro OBD app.
But I was able to graphically monitor something called "EGR Commanded". Note the engine is not fully warm.




At idle the "EGR %" is about 23% but varies quite a bit when revving the engine. I dont know whether this is within normal
values or not . Maybe someone here can tell me what EGR % actually is and whether the EGR is behaving normally.

Could this have been a temporary glitch ? I'm loathe to start dismantling things when there may be nothing wrong really. Jules

The graph is about normal.
Probably where the graph is up and down, you blip the throttle.
EGR error (which varies from -100% to 100%) is how much differs the desired and the actual values for the EGR.
Is calculated based on the EGR read valve position and the MAF values.
And if the 23% error is after those blips, the value is consistent with an restricted EGR path.
Also this is consistent with the intermittent error you have. Sometimes, varying with the engine temp, the ECU can compensate with the EGR restriction, sometimes it cant.
Keep in mind that the EGR test is made by the ECU at each ignition cycle and have to meet several conditions in order for the test to be performed.

When working properly should the EGR% be near 0% when the engine has settled to a steady idle ? Jules

At constant, non idle, RPMs, the error should settle towards 0%.
At idle, if you don't play with throttle, in the first 3 minutes, the error will also be 0%.
Then, after 3 minutes, the EGR will be automatically closed fully by the ECU, moment when the error should spike to 40%+ and stay there until you press again the throttle, moment when the EGR will start functioning again and error should be returning to about 0%.
At least this is how it's implemented in EDC16 ECUs, pre MY2011

Restricted Performance

Hi Jules

Any update on your car I get similar warnings but not very often and very peculiar

Yesterday car had been parked in the sun for 2 hours and read 30 degrees pn the dash when I got in

Started up no problems but Restricted Performance came on straight away, drove about a mile went off, pulled into a garage for fuel on start up same again and went off on less than a minute

My car will go for weeks with np problems then out of the blue the fault crops up

Like yourself before I replace the EGR I need to be 100% sure

Today drove 126 miles home towing 1700kg caravan no lights or faults tons of power 60 mph and tpp gear most of the way doesn't make sense will be interested in your findings.

To gain access to the EGR valve & cooler quite a lot needs to be removed.
From the JLR manual I'm trying to produce an ordered list of things to be removed, but it flits all over the place to various sections.

Is this correct ?

Engine Undertray
Engine cover
Plenum chamber cover
Wiper linkage
Secondary bulkhead
Disconnect EGR cooler coolant inlet & outlet
Heated O2 sensor ??
EGR & Cooler

Anything to be added or removed from the list ?

Are the later cars different (ie 2014) Jules

Im a bit disappointed; set up Torque Pro to read both "EGR commanded" ( what the ECU wants I presume) and "EGR error" (what the ECU gets from the EGR valve I presume). But it turns out the OBD only supplies "EGR commanded" data and not error data. So its not much use really in determining if the valve is sticking.
So I have decided to hold off dismantling the EGR for the time being as Ive had no more reduced performance faults since that one time.

Doing a B service this week instead.

Time will tell if the problem returns. Jules
