P0299 - Underboost

I am back with another Freelander 2 head scratch. 2009, GS manual.

Long drive from Nottingham to Cornwall and 150 miles in I get the orange engine warning light come on. No change in performance so stubbornly drove on. Got a local garage in Cornwall to do a code read, which came back as a P0299 underboost error. Code cleared and nothing back for the week until I drove back up to Notts. 100+ miles in a the light returned but drove on again with no impact on performance. I have cleared the code again at home and it has been fine for a couple of weeks of local drives.

Am I sitting on a time bomb? Is this a common issues?

Any thoughts appreciated 👍

I'm guessing the turbo boost control actuator is sticking, when being held in one position for an extended time. Although this would only be relevant once on the M5, as the A30 is pretty hilly, requiring more boost to maintain speed. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.
2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Gone.
2006 Tonga Green i6 HSE. Gone.
Audi A5 convertible, my daily driver.

As Nodge68 has already suggested, sticky turbo vanes/actuator, or even split intercooler hose or cracked intercooler.

Plenty of options to check out there. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 SE Auto Firenze Red

JLR workshop manual specifically mentions lubricating the turbo vanes actuator crank with LR029042 high temp grease. It also indicates that the crank must be disconnected from the electronic controller before manually moving the actuator crank and vanes through the whole range of movement multiple times to remove the soot deposits.

Well informed responses straight away. This forum is a treasure. It does all add up to sticky turbo vanes/actuator as the M5 drive would have left it static for a fair while. I dare not tackle the actuator myself but will get hold of the recommended lubricant and instruct my local garage along with another couple of jobs I need doing. Fingers crossed!

Hi All

I have problem with P0299 too.
Yesterday my ECU reduced performance of engine on the highway.
The lights on the dashboard was dark like the normal, no smoke from exhaust, no noisy...
After the reset of error code was all at the normal.
Today the same problem Sad

The actuator of turbocharger is mooving, actuator of swirl flaps is mooving too.
When I held hose behind the intercooler, after the adding gas was hose harder.

Have you some idea, what can be problem???

Hi,

My problem turned out to be a split intercooler hose, which was a quick and easy fix. I had the same generic underboost code as you but did not have the 'reduced engine performance' notification. Therefore thinking the issue might not be the same.
I am sure someone on here will give you some good guidance.

My turbo went belly up, so I had it changed (Ouch!) after I was getting over boost and then underboost warnings.
Turned out to be a faulty 'new' turbo from LandRover.

So, have you had a new Trubo?
