Condensing vapour when filling with diesel?

When filling with diesel today there was visible "steam" coming out of the filler as I was pumping diesel in. Temperature was about 5C or 6C. I've never seen this before and struggling to come up with a rational explanation. The air wasn't cold enough for my breath to show, so I can't see it being a matter of warm air being displaced from the tank.

Any ideas? 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

The fuel system has a feed and return system where there is a constant flow of warmed fuel back to the tank when the engine is running. Possibly you had just fueled after a long(ish) run thus the tank fuel was warmer than the new fuel being pumped in.

I think that was a common 'feature' of FL2's. I'm sure I used to get it on mine as well as on my Evoque. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Ok, thanks guys! Yes, the engine was properly warmed up. I was heading back home from Glasgow and was filling up in Perth, so I had done about 62 miles. If this is a common feature, I'm surprised that I've not seen it before. The filling station is undergoing a refurbishment and the fuel nozzle was coughing and spluttering as I was filling the tank, so I was worried that the "steam" was an indication of water or water vapour in the diesel. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto
