Watched that, great idea. Didn’t catch whether it was being rolled out here or if it’s just in Norway (or wherever they were) at the moment. Given the little time it took to change the battery, you can see people happy to queue and wait rather than plug in and charge up.

it seems like a great idea, but what is the cost for a change in battery everytime you fancy it?

One would assume you lease the battery, rather than buy it therefore you can change whenever and not end up owning a duff old battery, didn't Renault work on a lease battery? my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Norway does have an advantage that it generate a huge amount of hydro electricity (I think that they actually export it) and also has oil reserves.

Norway is a NATO member and was invaded in WW2, we lifted out their Royal Family by destroyer and supported their underground, hence the Xmas tree in Trafalgar Square each year, by the way it wasn't London that was thinking of replacing last years tree but Norway as they were embarassed by the state of last years tree as it was damaged in transit.

One could argue that Norway can afford the EV route as they are exporting 1.1 million barrels of oil a day which helps with cash flow. As least they are doing an infinitely better job than Australia. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Tesla designed the model S to be a quick battery swap but they never opened any swap stations instead rolling out their supercharger network

Australia has a huge problem - it's huge and relatively sparsely populated, so an electricity grid system similar to the UK isn't financially viable - transmission losses too great. I am lead to believe that towns outside the cities rely on diesel generator farms for electricity, so even if you did buy a Tesla it is in effect diesel powered. Solar power is a great option as compared to the UK it is very sunny, but it's back to diesel at night - when you actually need to charge the car. There are a couple of Australian companies looking into Redox flow batteries, these store up to 40MWh of energy (530 x Tesla 75kWh battery equivalent) and there's nothing to stop you throwing a couple together. Not exactly cheap, but it's got to be better than diesel generators - save the diesel I need it for my DS. https://invinity.com/yadlamalka-energy/ Please note that I am no connected to this particular company Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner |

Transmission loses are about 2% per 1000 km. We have a network along the east coast including South Australia. It is a massive network. Australia has a political problem & the people are doing their best to move on.
