COLD START - Strange behavior when starting the car

Hello everyone,

Started experiencing some strange behavior when is cold outside, the car starts pretty rough. Changed the glow plugs last week, but I still experience the rough engine start.

1. Glow plugs changed.
2. No smoke.
3. No jitter
4. It runs smoothly after the engine starts & on consecutive starts, there are no more issues.

What could it be? Considering the fact that the glow plugs are new, battery is from 2019.

Thanks !

There are 2 types of glow plugs, 12 Volts for the earlier cars, and 5 Volts for the later cars. Yours should be 5 Volt plugs, so if 12 Volt plugs were fitted, they'll not get hot enough to be of any use, hence the rough starting when cold. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

im having my glow plugs checked in a couple of weeks, due to rough cold starting lately as well as a dodgy starter button.

Checking various sites by my registration number brings 11v versions and 4.4v versions so may need to get the VIN and check with LR direct to double check (mines a 2013 SD4)

Not too sure how they can be tested in situ. Access seems to be the issue. This has been discussed on here before. The 5 & 11 volt systems are totally different. Even if they can be tested in situ ( resistance ), how would that prove that the correct voltage glow plugs have been used? Perhaps the two different glow plugs have a different resistance value, though I have not come across that info whilst doing my homework.

I changed mine before winter set in (11v system). 3 dead upon examination, however cold starting still difficult after change. I ended up cleaning the large fuse contacts and swapping the relay in the engine fuse box. No problems starting now at -9 degrees.

I believe that the 5 volt system utilises a different relay located behind the scuttle panel.

Hope you get it sorted.

The plugs in mine will most likely be the original ones so should be correct, no idea what test he will do on them but he knows his stuff

The 5v glow plugs need a 10mm socket

The 11v need an 8mm socket

They both have the same thread
