Hi guys, happy New Year!

So I had my full service and belt replacements done about a month ago. Timing belt and v belt, and all the bits that came with the replacement kit.

I’ve not been using the car much, but using it the other day, I heard a noise coming from the engine that sounded when I accelerate. If I take my foot off the pedal, this new noise stops.

It’s hard to describe, but it’s like a ticking noise, much like friction coming from somewhere. It then becomes a much more noticeable ‘clicking’ sound when I let the engine decelerate completely.

Also, if I open the bonnet after a short drive, there’s a hint of burning rubber which I presume might be normal due to the new belts.

Other than the diesel tractor-like sound these 2011 SD4 engines have always made, all else has always been perfect (super reliable car). Could this just be breaking in noise as a result of the new parts?

Garage is a fair drive away so trying to figure this out in case it’s a common issue before I make the journey.

Take it back to whoever done the work ASAP these symptoms dont sound right ! they might have got the timing belt a tooth out and the ticking is the valves touching the pistons? 2013 FL2 XS.

Could you put up a video of the sound, the belts could be rubbing on the guard ? if it as not be fitted back properly, needs investigation right away, just in case the belts snaps.

Yes, burning belt smell is never normal. Hopefully it's the accessory belt and not the timing belt.

If the timing belt has been rubbing it should probably be replaced again.

Hi guys. Appreciate the comments. So here’s where I am right now….

Took it back to garage, and after a couple days they’ve suggested it’s something wrong with the diff (they call it GRUPO in Spanish). Says it’s not an engine/timing belt issue, and after taking a closer look, guy says the scraping noise and clicking is coming from the diff.

He says service and belt replacements have nothing to do with this so it must be a coincidence or sheer bad luck that this has failed after their intervention. I’m suspicious but in all truth I guess these things can happen.

So he’s going to take a look inside to see what parts are knackered and let me know what it’s going to cost to replace.

Should I be concerned or is this repair something that is common and I can expect my car will be back on the road without issues?

Fancy finding myself in this position after getting the belts changed as a precautionary measure. Sod’s law I guess.
