SWMBO in her infinite wisdom, side swiped a skip whilst parallel parking


It's caused not so much a scratch as an absolute gorge in the side of the car. It's a 2011 Toyota Yaris so market value of probably £2k.

Do you think the insurance company would write it off? Probably be £1k bodyshop

Possibly , but the bigger concern at £1000 repair or a £2000 write off will be what the increase on future insurance premiums will be . Even with protected no claims there will certainly be higher premiums after a repair or a write off and you’ll declare a claim for 5 to 6 years . Also consider your repair or settlement will be nett of your policy excess . If that skip pulled out without indicating claim off it’s insurance.

For a £2K car, I'd just sand and spray it, and then run it till it dies. Steve

For a 2k car skip the sanding & just get a 150g spray can in close enough colour. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

If she is fussy about the looks of the car the other alternative would be hunt down a used rear door (in the same colour if possible) and just fill and rattle can the arch damage. Regards

A second hand rear door would seem to cover most of the damage, alternatively if you leave it, I doubt if it will make much difference to trade in price when you come part exchange it.
The latter I know is true, from similar damage a few years ago on a Vauxhall Caviler, at car change time. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

How do you side swipe a skip that low down ? Even a mini skip would cause damage higher up due to the shape of it. This is a 4 yard skip and it's the lowest you can get (Yes, there is a 2 yard skip, but it's taller and shorter than the 4 Yard)

My daughter was hit in the rear end of her Micra.
I said "write off" as tailgate was buckled and rear quarters, more importantly the boot floor was bend on the rear chassis arm.
I bought the car for her just 12 mths ago for £2k.
even I had estimated rebuild at £3K-3.5k

NO !....... insurance paid a total bill of £3,350 to repair it. (at the other parties cost)

Leave it and sell it on Ebay when you change car. I rolled a Saab down the A14 towing a Jaguar XJ-S behind it. I lost my excess, had a protected no claims, and got paid out two and a half times the amount that I originally paid for it. £3500 profit! I was amazed.

Re the size of the skip, I thought the same but on some skips there are fastening points for the lorry to lift it from which can be low down so I'm assuming it was that.

Just to update this, the insurer authorised repair and it is like new again now. SWMBO paid £225 total excess. Repair would have been £1500. Car is actually worth £4k maybe a bit more. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

It has to be this bad to be a total loss
