recent power loss due to storm

Poor people who still do not have electricity following last weeks storm.
Aside from Hugh impact on every day living, showers, heating and cooking there has been no media coverage on transport for those with EVs.
Ironically mother nature does not even spare battery charging Rolling Eyes
Probably rescue services used ICE vehicles.

We were without a boiler for a week last winter which was a pita even though we still had power and an immersion heater to supply hot water. Can't imagine how those poor people are coping with no power at all - some poor little chap featured on the news today who relies on specialist medical equipment indoors to keep him alive, was moved into a hotel with all his gear. Believe his parents home had just been reconnected to the grid but he has to wait for house to warm up before he can be moved back.

A good point worth noting.

Also I notice that relief has been found to some people using petrol or diesel portable generators.

It is worrying that we may be 'putting all our eggs in one basket' by solely concentrating on (mainly) centrally generated, and distributed, electricity.

Also, I was a little disturbed to hear at a recent talk I attended that we heavily rely on GPS satellites, to provide the timing signals that control most of our utilities and services. Again 'eggs and baskets' come to mind.

A recent report to Parliament (for example)

This is why the UK has started its Space Defence Department. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

The ev thing is not that bad if power is down for a few days
Most people will not need to charge daily and if you do find you are low on power when storms take some supplies down then you drive somewhere that's not down and charge
Remember without electricity petrol pumps won't work
Gas and oil boilers won't work
Cash registers and card machines won't work

The best way to cover yourself for a power outage would be a big solar array and a home battery and an automatically operated mains disconnect
This way when the power goes out you will get a flicker of the lights and all will carry on as normal
If you end up off for a long time (like my friend that was off until today) you may have to trim your use to just essential electrical use and this will allow you to survive off grid for a limited time

We have 120 watts of solar to power our small fridge & charge auxiliary batteries & charge phones etc while camping. We use a Victron MPPT controller & have a spare for redundancy. We use a metho stove for cooking. Most importantly we have a hand grinder for our coffee beans so we are ok! The first thing we run out of is water. We can use the solar setup at home if needed.

In Australia people have set up their caravans with up to about 1.5kW of solar & 500 - 600AH of batteries to run a small 2.5kW air conditioner, induction cooker & the usual fridge, often a second one & run all their devices. They are not going without. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

If I was rural, I'd build or acquire a steam-driven generator along these lines...

https://www.otherpower.com/steamengine.html

They can burn anything... natural gas/propane if available; wood, coal, etc otherwise. Useful for temporary grid outages, or full-on zombie apocalypse.

Fantastic Idea.

Perhaps this is the answer to all our problems, buy an old BMW i3 range Extender and swap out the small petrol engine and instal this instead. The Steam Whistle is, of course, a must. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
