Ive had my car 5 years in December 2021, When I bought it the last owner told me the battery was a year old, so simple maths says its now 6 years old, amazingly I have only done 12,000 miles in 5 years, I did have to charge the battery during lockdown due to total lack of use . . . . Does age or usage knacker a battery ?


QUESTION :- Due to its age, should I just replace it now or wait until it fails . . . . .?

I have a 09 plate .......... with the original battery in it, as per the stamp on the battery terminal. Owned vehicle for 6yrs.

I trickle charge the battery when car not in use. I hope to 'nurse' the battery through this winter.

all this "change your battery every 6yrs" ...... is marketing sales waffle.

I'd say that if it isn't showing any symptoms, hang fire for now, but... at the first sign of any electrical weirdness get it changed - mine is a 2014 and was on the original battery until last year, I started getting weirdness in the ICE/satnav unit & a new battery fixed it, the old battery still had plenty of ooomph to start the vehicle at that point.

I replaced with a YBX9115 Yuasa AGM Start Stop Car Battery 12V 80Ah - from Tanya batteries - if memory serves was about £130 - that was at a time where batteries were scarce and I'd been waiting some weeks to get one at some sort of sensible price (most places didn't have any!) - others were charging north of £300 which just wasn't gonna happen If supply has resolved now I imagine you will get one at a sensible price - the other often named manufacturer would be a Varta (F21 I think) 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 Manual Dynamic

Forgot to mention , I carry a second battery (same spec as original) for auxiliary use ....... and jump starting if needed.

I live in a moderate climate. I wait until the battery shows hints of start performance degradation (usually 4-6 years depending on vehicle), then replace it. I can get away with that because I don't really have cold starts below 50*F.

If also got an ANCEL BST200 battery tester ($35 USD) which I'll use annually on batteries when they're over four years old. It's supposed to work with the battery connected or disconnected, but so far the data is garbage with the battery connected, so I at least pull off the ground.

If I had to start the LR2 below freezing, I'd probably just replace at five years. We know this car is prone to gremlins if the battery voltage gets low.

My FL2 has the original battery now eight years old starts instantly even in this cold spell we are having though the stop/fart has stopped working dont bother me as I dont use it anyway, however I think I might be on borrowed time so thinking of replacing it with a varta F21? 2013 FL2 XS.

Who remembers when failing batteries could be charged regularly sometimes every day or so. Not anymore with modern batteries I count myself lucky if I can do one charge or jump start to get me home.

Just fitted a Varta F21 to my td4e, stop start started working straight away. However, still sluggish on the starter, so fitting a replacement shortly. My Varta was shipped without transit plugs in the vent holes which caused me some consternation ( see my post), but all turned out well.

can any of you experts confirm if this battery will fit my 2007 HSE, the battery in it is an RAC 110, I like the price,

According to Tayna you need a 96 battery it may be too long, according to Tayna the 110 battery is for 2009 vehicles onwards, but if you have a 110 fitted already it must fit, also seems a touch cheap but the RAC battery has a CCA of 800A and the Powerline CCA 700A which can make a difference on cold mornings, for starting the CCA is the criteria it has the capability of spinning the engine faster and longer in the cold. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

If you have multiple cars , or big Diesel engines , and you live in a place where it gets really cold ( l mean like Pennine winter or Highlands winter cold ) , having one of these in your garage can be a lifesaver .

Under no circumstances be tempted to use that charger / starter on 24V

My brother used a similar device set at 24V to jump start his BMW bike Fried the power transistors that fire the coils, fried the zenner diodes in the instrument panel, and the starter module.
BMW dealer said the bike was effectively scrap.. OK it too a couple of weeks, and a lot of fun on my behalf but fixed for less than £200. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
