Insurance views on Safety Systems and Electronic Mods

I have just been renewing my insurance and noticed that some changes have been put in the small print.

It looks as if the insurance companies are catching up on the fact that changes to a vehicles software can graetly effect a vehicles performance dynamically or in the event of a crash.

I wonder how long it will be before the Annual MOT catches up and starts to include certifying that the vehicles software is up to date and all electronic features work a designed?

We have added the following:
b. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
If your vehicle is fitted with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), we
will not pay any claims for loss of or damage to your vehicle unless all software
and/or safety updates are installed and up to date and all manufacturer's
guidelines followed
. If we make payments under the Road Traffic Acts, we
reserve the right to recover any such amounts from you.
As part of the repair process we will arrange for any defects to the ADAS fitted
to your vehicle, arising from the incident for which you are claiming, to be
repaired and/or recalibrated.
If you choose to have your vehicle repaired yourself, you must arrange for
the fitted ADAS to be repaired and/or recalibrated immediately following the
repair
.
We have amended the second bullet point under 'c. Keeping your policy up to
date':
Change or proposed change to the vehicle itself such as fitting alloy wheels,
bodywork alterations, engine modifications or change to the functionality and/
or performance of your vehicle made either electronically
or via over the air
(OTA) updates that are not mandated by your vehicles manufacturer.

Jules, it was SAGA.
There were a whole load of changes notified, some beneficial, some clarification, but few which I would worry about enough to change.

As for the rest of the document, the main condition that I always note is that they don't include theft, if the car is unlocked, or the keys are present. I am sure that it should allow for moments when you are loading, and also unintentional misuse/failure of remote key when locking vehicle. I tend to use remote from pocket while wondering away from car, although I do tend to look back to see if the mirrors have folded. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Thanks for the heads up. Definitely something to check when renewing. Meanwhile I'll have a read through my current policies - which by chance are all with Aviva this year. Jules

You can never get fair and realistic cover with insurance in my experience. On my classic policy for my Triumph Stag. it's not covered for theft if the hood is left down. even in the garage. Silly thing is a Stanley knife will gain you entry to the car quickly and quietly. 2007 TD4 XS The work horse that earns its up keep

Remind me never to use SAGA for motor insurance. Smile

It just sounds like they have another excuse to not pay out if they suspect something dodgy on your car in the event of an accident.

For example if you have not told your insurer that have repainted your wheels in a different colour, they could take a closer look to see what else has not been declared, such as software updates or anything else as specified in their small print.

I can't imagine any bodywork repair shop will be snooping at your car that closely for the average body repair job.

Generally the specialised insurance companies that cater for specific categories like the under 30's or over 60's tend to have special premiums that are more expensive than the mainstream insurers, I have checked Saga and a couple of other so called low premium for over 50's/60's and they tend to have more restrictions and clauses costing more than say Aviva, LV and Axa, in fact Axa for me just returned from 3 years in Cyprus as an partner of a civil servant posted to a MOD post was some £300 cheaper than the next quote as they honoured my last UK NCB. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

My wife's Suzuki Swift has ADAS and all the rest of the toys and when she had a cracked windscreen replaced they couldn't do it on the drive but it had to go to the local Autoglass workshop for "recalibration" of the cameras behind the rear view mirror. I think she got some sort of certificate in case the insurers ask for it. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I suppose though in effect you are leaving the vehicle unsecured, with the hood stowed.

Having said that I never checked mine when we had convertables, although I never left the Porker without its hood up more because of the Gulls than anything else though Laughing Regards

Very common now with screen mounted driving aids, often they might have to take it to a main dealer to get the calibration done as well, I think this is why the past few years the excess on screen cover has really shot up. Regards
