That to me is a very noisy i6 TBH…….first thing to look at with that odd hooting is the drive belts, and pulleys. Regards

Having said that and listening to the noise again it is quite regular…..another possibility is maybe some kind of vacuum being made and the hoot is when the pipe/valve (or whatever) gives in and releases the vacuum?

I get the same noise sometimes, and I have a brand-new belt and idler/tensioner. Replacing the PCV valve assembly mostly took care of it although sometimes it still does it on a cold morning. Guessing some blow-by around rings or maybe valve stem seals. The noise may be normal functioning of the PCV valve? I actually replaced the PCV when the oil dipstick started popping out, solved that problem too. |

Bypass the PCV by removing the oil fill cap.

Thanks for the replies all. She does sound.like a bag of nails when the phone is really close, scary! Believe it or not, she's super smooth and quiet in real life - other than a weird, rhythmic honk

Craig,
If that makes sense to you then no need to read further For me Inches of Mercury are more familiar units. At idle a typical engine is around 18 inches of Mercury Converting 1.0 Kpa to inches of Mercury equals 0.29 inches of Mercury The negative number from Volvo just indicates that you have a Vacuum in the engine and not a positive pressure. This is a difficult pressure to measure (it is very low) To over come this difficulty the Volvo owners will remove the oil fill cap and place a disposable glove on the valve cover where the fill cap was and check to see if the glove inflates or deflates. Inflates = PCV not functioning (no vacuum) Deflates or stays the same = PCV functioning If the glove rapidly gets sucked into the valve cover then the PCV is applying too much vacuum to the engine Hopefully this make sense Note: if the glove inflates until the HONK and then deflates and the cycle repeats please make a video I will fall out of my chair laughing if the cause and effect are that clear. Good luck Paul 2008 LR2 Si6 2010 S80 Si6 |
