Door handles

Hi
I have a my 59 fl2 in Stornoway grey the door handles have been sprayed the same colour but the paint is all chipping off.
Can I just remove the handles without taking the door cards off, These are the one piece handle, I have done a search and I am more confused, My local mechanic says he thinks I will have to remove the door cards any help would be appreciated. Confused
