Tyre and TPMS advice...

Hello,

I've a 2009 Freelander 2 SE that came from the factory with a set of 5x 19" alloys.

The tyres are nearing the end of their life and while I've been hunting for a set of 5 (or 6) 17" or 18" rims, they're typically a bit too much for my budget. Particularly when you throw in having to get a new set of tyres on top.

I want to go bush in this car so I was tossing up either trying to locate a set of 17-18" steel rims (seems tricky finding 5x108 18" x 8" steel rims) or having compared tyres sizes, going to 255 55 19s on my current rims which gives me a better choice of tyre and a touch more ground clearance and possibly ride quality too.

Any thoughs on this? Also, having picked up two screws in the front drivers side tyre resulting in slow leaks, I'm chasing a good 'bang for buck' TPMS set up too if anyone has any experiences to share... Plenty of cheapies on fleabay but prefer something wired in over the solar powered ones that eBay is filled with.

Cheers,

I used a careud u903 (with external sensors) for a while, it's wired in. They are also sold on ebay and/or amazon but they are cheaper on aliexpress. It did warn me in time when I got a small puncture in a tire, could get it fixed before the tire was empty. But lately some of the sensors need battery replacement every month or so while the first batteries lasted about a year and a half. I'm thinking of buying a whole new set, the price if 2 new sensors is about half the price of the set.

In 2018 we destroyed 1 tyre on the Gibb River Road, turned out to be a screw, bought TPMS in Broome from ARB. We had intended to buy it before the trip ran out of time.

We had 3 more leaks & repaired them on the run. 1 destroyed tyre costs a lot more than TPMS.

With external TPMS you just need 4 sensors, then you can swap between your 5 or 6 wheels as needed. It is a bit irritating at first taking them off to air up & down, but you get pretty efficient after awhile.

19 inch rims with the larger tyre size will be ok, just have to be a bit more careful, more so on the stone covered roads. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

How long have you been looking? If you're patient you should find some eventually. Search for XC90, same pitch, ET and load capacity. Generally much much cheaper.

There are 4 Freelander 17" rims on ebay at the moment with 12.5% off.

Not mine, I have my eye on them but can't use them just now. MY11 SD4 SE Auto

Smithfield..... Covid county!

That's 4/6 of your rims done!

I paid $850 for my sixth 18 inch rim. I would have got them but now set up with 18 inch rims.

With 17 inch you can go with 245/70 tyre which is a better size, a bit more height, 6mm, & a bit narrower, better on fuel. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Thanks for the replies, I've had a look at some the previous threads. Sorry thought I'd submitted a reply - clearly got that wrong!

I've been keeping an eye out for a few weeks and missed out on the ebay listed 17" alloys.

Freight from the eastern states is around $250-300 so need to bear that in mind.

The TPMS is a bit easier to sort - looking at one that comes with six sensors - one for the spare and a spare...

Cheers,

I found out this week my ball and chains Nissan Note has a nifty feature I didn’t know about apparently if TPMS warning comes up you turn the car off but put the ignition on then connect the inflator and when it reaches the correct pressure it beeps the horn once and flashes the indicators once. Yet to try it but I like the idea of that.

It's to wake you up because the inflator takes so long! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

An update

Hi all

I’ve bought a set of four RR 18” wheels and tyres and located a fifth wheel for a spare from someone else.

The tyres are road tyres but given I commute 90-100km a day I think that’ll be fine for the moment.

Anyone want to buy a good set of five 19” Freelander wheels???😁 the tyres have about 5-6k km left in them.

Cheers

Hello Blahbah, enjoying your post but could you update your profile to show you are in Perth, Western Australia and not Scotland. Big postage bill to here if someone fancies your wheels.

oops! Although in my defence anyone in Australia would assume it's the Australian Perth. I have updated it as requested - if I was allowed out of the country I'd happily deliver for AU$1800-2000 (rims only). I think that's what a return airfare costs...

Thanks Blah, w have very good friends in Sydney who keep us up to date with the Australian set up at present.
Personally, i think your way of closing down and not letting anybody in or out will work.

Thanks mate, I finally jumped on those wheels when they got re-listed and I wangled a good deal. Tyres are like new, too. I've now got 9 17" wheels - 4 LR and 5 Volvo. Extras for towed vehicles and plenty of spares.
