Humming /drone - RESOLVED

Hi all

Hoping to tap into the knowledge of the group please!

I have a 2007 FL2 2.2 manual with 110k on the clock. It has developed a very noticeable humming/droning sound that I’m struggling to diagnose.

These are the symptoms that I’m seeing:

- It kicks in at around 20mph and seems most noticeable at 40-50mph
- it’s difficult to pinpoint where it’s coming from but I can definitely feel a vibration through the pedals and the drivers footwell floor.
- The sound/vibration doesn’t change if I dip the clutch or put in neutral
- The sound/vibration eases when I got around right hand bends
- There is no play in the wheels if I jack the vehicle up and try to wobble them back and forth.

Any suggestions as to what this might be, or suggested next steps to investigate would be very gratefully received.

Many thanks

Ben[/list]

Offside wheel bearing - probably front. The right hand wheels are 'unloaded' as you go steer right

Thanks Reggie

Was hoping that might be the case.

I’ve just replaced the OSR wheel bearing, so it must be the front. Strangely there is no play in the front wheel when I try to wobble it back and forth, but I guess the bearing can still be knackered and not show any signs of play?!

Thanks again

My experience, with other cars at least, is that a tiny amount of damage to a bearing can cause a huge amount of noise without any detectable play. I think the bearing must be very worn/collapsed before you can feel movement by rocking the wheel.

There is also the fact that when the wheel is on the ground it's pressing down on the bottom of the bearing whereas when its jacked up it's hanging off the top if you see what I mean so it's not a good test. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Just a thought, did you have the noise before you changed the OSR bearing, or only since you changed it? FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Hi Ian

No the noise was there prior to me replacing the osr bearing. There was a bit of play in that wheel and a knock coming from that corner. I’ve replaced the radius arm bush and the bearing which has corrected the knock, but the whine still remains!

Thanks everybody for your replies. I’ve ordered a new wheel bearing for the osf corner. Will report back once I’ve fitted it.

Thanks again

Strange but true - I had a similar problem and it disappeared after fitting a new power steering reservoir plus fluid, a cheap and easy fix. That was several thousand miles ago and have had no problem since, note also that my wheel bearings are all original at 75k miles.

Hi all

Just to report back. I’ve now replaced the front wheel bearing (whole assembly inc hub and knuckle) and the whining has now gone.

Many thanks to all of you who replied, your advice is very much appreciated Smile

Kind regards

Ben
